First look at Windows 7 beta 1
ZDNET ^ | December 27th, 2008 | Adrian Kingsley-Hughes

I have to thank Santa for leaving me a copy of Windows 7 beta 1 in my stocking for Christmas Day. This beta (build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400) should be the first and only beta from Microsoft of Windows 7, and I’m pleased to report that it’s a good one.

**********************SNIP*********************

Judging by the quality of this build, I expect Windows 7 to be released June/July of ‘09. I really can’t see Microsoft dragging out the release a year.

Does anyone other than the mainstream media say Vista is crap?

Even a friend of mine that works at Microsoft says Vista is crap and to upgrade to XP instead of using Vista.

Count me in - for the XP underground...

Our home runs 2 IBM desktops and one IBM ThinkPad with XP Professional — and we haven’t experienced a single blue screen or failure to perform as expected for the past 6 years or more.....

However - I’m becoming convinced my next machine will be from Apple. Our children and grandchildren are ALL Apple converts and we feel like “relics”....

My needs are pretty simple, I like to play games on my PC, and I like to mod those games. Since Vista is nothing but trouble for gaming, and essentially makes modding a pain in the ass because it protects program files and can’t do anything with .rar files, I’ll never use it. If their next OS has the same features, I won’t use it either. I have my XP disc, and as far as I am concerned, it is priceless.

“Why the need for 64bit? 32bit ought to be enough for anybody.”

32-bit OS’s can only access 4gig of memory total(that includes System + Graphics + BIOS). So you have to go to a 64-bit OS to utilize over 4gig. But for probably 95% out there 32bit is fine.

I have a 2gig rig with a 1 gig graphics card. I just bought 2gig more Corsair 6400 (Just $39 at local Fry’s!!) To utilize that extra memory I am taking the plunge into 64-bit Vista Home Primium. Waiting for the NewEgg.com package to arrive... It’s the “new-install” OEM version as opposed to the upgrade, so I got a new 650Gig HD (just $75 at new egg :). I’ll install 64-bit Vist on the new drive and keep my exiting old C: with XP on it just in case I have a need to go back to it in a hurry.

Regarding someones ‘Vista 64 sucks for gaming’ comment in one of the above posts, the people over at extremeoverclocking.com (all heavy gamers) seem to be of the opinion Vista 64 is the way to go unless you have some old games that won’t run on it... Anyway, I guess that I’ll be seeing for myself as soon as the UPS guy delivers my package :)

You would be wrong as Rush Limbaugh uses Apple Macs.

I currently have VS2k8, Vmware Workstation with 2 to 4 VMs running, multiple custom apps, Excel 2k7, Outlook 2k7, Firefox 3 and IE 7 running with zero threading issues.

CPU utilization has been 80/75/60 averaged over the past 30 minutes.

The various Vista boxes I have at home and the office have yet to crash and they are under near constant load.

Same applies to the Windows Server 2008 boxes I have.

Good for you. Now, whatever you do, don’t try and load any Adobe apps, printer drivers that Vista doesn’t automatically find, or connect to Novell or Unix/Linux resources.

On day one some websites gave the blue screen. I went to Dell website and updated the bios, nvida and sound card and no problems since. The xD Olympus media card under ALL conditions (I am certain of that) gives the Blue Screen of Death.

I have Adobe reader and Photoshop installed along with a driver for my network printer that didn’t come stock.

I also have no issues connecting to the various Solaris or Linux VM that exist on my network.

If Microsoft is coming out with Windows 7 so soon after just launching Vista then that tells you something right there. Anyone using XP would be a fool to upgrade to Vista. Like I said, I will continue to use XP Professional until Hal9000 takes command.

It tells you that Microsoft is getting back to their previous release schedule.

That’s easy enough to explain though.

Your friend wrote/sells it and my friend supports it :)

Uh, no. Rush Limbaugh runs Mac OSX on his 8 Mac Pros. He might have Vista on Parallels or Fusion... but Rush is always praising his Macs.

Document everything and publish a book because you are in the minority.
