I prefer curtains myself. With sheers underneath so you are able to have the curtains open and see out but people outside can't see in.

I like my privacy!

I love sheers under drapes. I’m afarid I’m a 1930’s to 1950’s style kinda girl. Traditional is my thing.

Well, I’m kinda beyond all that. My favorite curtains are Priscillas, with cafe curtains or wooded shutters half-way up, and roller shades to keep out the gawkers.

I think there are now insulated roller shades. Check with Sears or Penney’s.

Grandma had white, sheer, pricillas in the dining room. No one could see in that room. I loved them. She had the old brown paper window shades under them. In summer, she’d pull them halfway down to keep the room cool. They don’t make those shades anymore. I mean the brown paper. In the early 70’s they became white vinyl. She hated them. I did too. Window shades have gotten better since the 70’s but I srill love the brown paper ones.

Tired this morning.

Hung out on the IKE thread until the wee hours.

Things down there are lookin’ ugly in the light of day.

And I am SOOO glad I’m no longer a Texican. My son lives in Arkansas, and I suspect he’ll get his share of it, too.

I have a sister in FL, and I have no clue how she handles all the hurricanes. It would drive me nuts to have to evacuate my home every few weeks, or even once a year.

I mean, how can you even have a normal life? What do you do with all your photos and documents and family heirlooms?

*shudder*

On 9/11, I was up to the wee small hours, trying to deal with it all over again, so I know the fatigue you feel.

I’ll take my chances with the ‘quakes.

You get no warning, but all that means is you don’t spend days and days anxiously watching updates to a storm track on the weather channel, and wondering how bad it’s gonna get.

With the shakers it’s just — BAM!! You rock and roll for a minute or two; stuff falls down, other stuff breaks, and then it’s over, and you’re either dead, or you’re not.

Our biggest problem with disasters here in California, is that the gun laws have made this place a Paradise for post-disaster looters.

You won’t see much of that in Texas; folks down there know that looting is a great way to get shot dead.

Not so California.

Looters out here get props from the Libs for “stickin’ it to da man.” They make folk heroes out of ‘em.

Central Utah was where I grew up, so I am familiar with quakes. We have them here (Vegas) and I’ve lived through several of them in CA. Thankfully, I moved back to Vegas six months before the Northridge quake, or I probably would have been killed. Most of the fatalities from building collapse took place in the apartment complex across the street from CSUN...the epicenter.

The entire apartment complex collapsed on itself.

And there is something wrong with cowards in the government who don’t want us to protect our homes. I lived through the Rodney King Riots, too, but I had a .357 revolver as an equalizer. And I was in the Crenshaw District.

"This was an investment property for him, he's never lived here. The sad thing is we live in the sticks and small farms are being sold off to developers. Some of these places have been in the same family for generations. We keep getting told all these McMansions will bring in more tax revenue then these little townships jack up the taxes. 4 years ago, there were an average of 4000 homes for sale. Today it's 10,000 and they're still building. Idiots."

I think your landowner has overvalued his property by at least double. I'm guessing he paid about $350,000 for it about ten years ago.

Even a generous appreciation puts its current value at $800,000. It may even be worth it.

But that would put a 30-year mortgage payment at five thousand a month. You need a good plan for how to make the property generate income to support that level of financing, or you need to have enough interested parties, (i.e. your grown children), who will support its purchase.

Is there a way to set up a combination business plan that could make it an income-producing property? Perhaps a bed-and-breakfast/conference center/retreat or a commercial winery or such?

It would be nice to salvage the intact property, but it looks hopeless without a grand vision.

So I’m supposed to tell you about the drag races, according to my mom.
The ‘ZMax’ track (I’m not sure why it’s called that) is apparently brand new in Charlotte. It’s a nice track..clean, mostly orderly. The parking lot is confusing. Once you get in you’re allowed to walk around. The people will let you go anywhere except onto the track in front of a dragster..although if you tried to go there, they might just let you get run over by a smoke-belching ‘vette.
I went on Friday. It was the very first qualifying event, so there were seventy or so cars in line to race and a bunch more in the pits. I don’t know much about the pits themselves, because it was too crowded to walk around without getting in someone’s way. Also, I was only there for about an hour and didn’t have time to chat with everyone.
There were new cars ready to go as soon as the others had finished their twelve-second runs to the finish. It looked like most of the Queen City Corvette club was at the race. There were some Mustangs, a couple of Vipers, and one or two more expensive cars. And, of course, some stupid vehicles that nobody in their right mind would want to race...there was a heavily modified PT Cruiser on the track. It looked like every kid with a souped-up Plymouth from had shown up to race...there were plenty of bad cars. One of the Mustangs started blowing black smoke from under the hood before its race started and wouldn’t run.
Anyway, it was pretty fun to watch, and not too crowded on a Friday morning. I might have gone again in the afternoon since I had a free ticket, but there were other things going on.

WOO-HOO!

Thanks!

“ZMax” is the sponsor of the track. I can’t remember if it’s the track sticky stuff (it will pull your foot out of your shoe if you walk on it before it is set,) or a car polish...seems like it should be the latter!

Most Drag race tracks ARE clean because it’s a “safety issue.” And most of the fans comply with the “rules” as the track announcer lays them down, especially before a national event.

If you’re part of the “pit crew” (indicated by a colored wrist band) you can get onto the track in order to photograph or video the racer you are the pit crew for. Otherwise, you have to stand behind the wall.

You also don’t want to stand behind the cars during a burn-out, as you’ll get “cooties” on you...rubber from the tires, and sludge from the track!

If it’s mostly a local event, or sponsored by a car maker (Chevy does a lot of them) you will see more of one kind than others, and local clubs will come to show off their cars. Lots of restorations and antiques.

The cars that “nobody in their right mind would want to race” (LOL!) are probably the pride and joy of the owners, who spend their last dime on a part of some kind. It’s an addictive sport, for sure!

Most of the entries are in “brackets” of speed and time. The drivers use white shoe polish on the windows that designate the time they think it will take to get to the finish light. Sometimes, if a faster car races a slower car (luck of the draw) the faster car will have to wait a second or two for the slower car to leave before it gets a green light.

It’s a lot of fun to go and learn things, and I’m sure, when you get farther into your auto class, you will have more opportunity to see more races.

I’ve been going to drag races for most of my life (when I went to my first one, it was on a county road, out in the farmland!) but I still ask questions. I still have to look at cars, engines, and equipment, and once in a while, if the announcers aren’t too busy, I can go up and bother them.

It’s a fun place to kill some time, and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me! (I was SO excited for you! LOL!)

Anoreth is very fond of fast cars. I have to remind her regularly that the Purple Thing *isn’t* one!

I had a coworker in the insurance business who rebuilt and raced Corvettes. It’s like a cult!
