Martian soil could grow turnips, Phoenix finds
New Scientist ^ | 06/26/08 | Rachel Courtland

Some Martian dirt has the same basic chemistry as garden soil, a new analysis from the Phoenix lander suggests. The find widens the range of organisms that might be able to live on Mars.

Although the analysis is not yet complete, the lander has already found trace levels of nutrients like magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride. Although these ingredients were known to exist in Martian soil, until now no one was sure whether they would be soluble in water and thus potentially available for life.

The whole thin air and colder-than-hell issue might make it tough...

JPL audio available for free download (mp3 audio file format) or streamed listening. The page includes teleconferences between Phoenix science investigators and reporters.

If it can grow Pot, there will be a mass migration up there.

We need to find some peat bogs up there! Lots of nice stuff preserved by them. Then we could explore for coal. Transport a bunch of O2 up there and burn the coal and pretty soon we could grow trees. An Apple tree or two.

Yes. Send them all to a collection of green houses in Vastitas Borealis.

Then chop funding to the space program for a few years.

THe thin air is a result of its lack of magnetic field and light gravity, two important things for keeping gases close to the surface, IIRC. The only way man could ever settle on the dust ball is to build shielded structures that are airtight, and of course heated.

Wouldn’t there eventually be a way to build an atmosphere after a few hundred years of growing trees?

Does anyone care that gasoline is $4.50 in Chicago? Who cares about ice or turnips on Mars. America needs $1.90/gal gas.
