Home gardening offers ways to trim grocery costs [Survival Today, an on going thread]

Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick

Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.

At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."

Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.

A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

[snipped]

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.

"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

I am curious, and would like to try her method in a crockpot, an interesting experiment. If you had a few chips in the bottom of the crockpot and baked potatoes, would they taste like campfire cooked potatoes?

I wonder if you put soaked, charred pieces of apple or mesquite in a foil packet in an oven with your food, would that give you a smoky flavor? hmmmm, interesting question...

You don’t use water in the crockpot for potatoes, just toss them in and bake...........

I never thought of that! Great idea! How long does it take on low, and how long on high?

Tempeh - The Super Healthy Probiotics Food
By Fanda Amnesiana

Article Word Count: 592 [View Summary] Comments (0)

If you are a person who concerns about health, healthy food should be in your family's daily menu. For your today's menu, why don't you cook something delicious with probiotics contents and have many health benefits to reduce cancer risk, good for diabetic diets, lower cholesterol, boost immune system, and even help weight loss program? ‘Is there one single food that have all those benefits?’ Yes, that is tempeh, a traditional food made from fermented soybean!

In my country, Indonesia, tempeh has been our traditional food from maybe hundreds of years ago. We can find tempeh in almost all markets, even in small villages. Tempeh has been a part of our life. Whether we cook for daily meals (served with rice), or when we have a fine dining in restaurants, we can always find tempeh. It is because tempeh can be processed into many delicious foods. But not as many of its health benefits!

Probiotics
Tempeh is one of many probiotics food sources. Rhizopus Oligosporus, good bacteria contained in tempeh, produces natural antibiotic that inhibits some harmful bacteria. Rhyzopus can also improve your intestinal digestion health, as well as your skin health, from atopic dermatitis, pimples, cellulitis, etc. On the other hand, the fermentation process that change whole soybeans into tempeh, produces an enzyme called phytase. This enzyme can break down phytate acid, and therefore increase body absorption of minerals like iron, calcium, and zinc. Good news for you who have anemia, as tempeh is also claimed of having 4mg iron/100 gram!

High Protein - Low Calories
Tempeh, being processed from soybeans, becomes a high protein food, even highest among other plant foods. Daily consumption of 166 gram tempeh contributes around 60% of our protein daily needs. And with the fact that tempeh has less than 329 calories, it is safe to assume that tempeh can be your perfect choice of healthy food!

As a plant protein source, tempeh can provide healthy diet for diabetes mellitus patient too. Diabetic people can use tempeh as a substitute of animal protein foods like milk and meat.

Isoflavone
Now you can get many healthy benefits of isoflavone from tempeh, which is including :
· Improve bone mineral content, reduce the risk of osteoporosis
· Antioxidant to fight free radical that cause cancer
· Lower cholesterol (lower LDL and increase HDL)
· Lower heart disease risk
· Relieve menopause symptoms

High Fiber
The high fiber content of soybeans which is found in tempeh can help diabetic patient to control sugar level in their blood. It can also prevent colon cancer, improve kidney health by replacing animal protein to soybeans, and prevent diarrhea in children.

Boost Immune System & Health
The amino acids can improve the superiority of tempeh in boosting immune system. Tempeh is also an important source of vitamin B12, which vegetarians can use to replace meat, and an excellent source of calcium.

Low Calorie & Low Carbohydrate
And last but not least, tempeh is a suitable food for weight loss diet. Being low calories and low carbohydrate, including tempeh in your dietary food list, will help you to reduce the amount of fat stored in your body. If you combine this perfect diet with exercise, you will increase lean muscle mass that will help you to burn fat. And what make it more perfect, tempeh has its high protein you can use to regain your energy after having your weight loss exercise session.

So, I don't need to underline, that tempeh is definitely a super healthy food for healthy people, with healthy budget, which, with a little creativity can turn into a super delicious food!

Flurry of Spam Targeting the Federal Bureau of Investigation

Consumers continue to be inundated by spam purportedly from the
FBI. As with previous spam attacks, the latest versions use the names
of several high ranking executives within the FBI and even the IC3 to attempt to
defraud consumers.

Many of the spam e-mails currently in circulation claim to be an “official order”
from the FBI’s Anti-Terrorist and Monetary Crimes Division, from an alleged FBI
unit in Nigeria, confirm an inheritance or contain a lottery notification, all informing
recipients they have been named the beneficiary of millions of dollars.
To claim the large sum, recipients are instructed to furnish their personally identifiable
information (PII)
and are often threatened with some type of penalty, such as prosecution, if they
fail to do so. Specific PII information requested includes, but is not
limited to, the recipient’s name, banking information, telephone number, and a copy
of their passport.

The spam e-mail allegedly from the IC3 states that the recipient has extorted money
and will be given a limited amount of time to refund the money or face prosecution.

Do not respond. These e-mails are a hoax.

The FBI does not send unsolicited e-mails of this nature. FBI Executives are briefed
on numerous investigations but do not personally contact consumers regarding such
matters. In addition, the IC3 does not send threatening letters to consumers demanding
payments for Internet crimes.

Consumers should not respond to any unsolicited e-mails or click on any embedded
links associated with such e-mails, as they may contain viruses or malware.

It is imperative consumers guard their PII. Providing your PII will compromise your
identity!

If you have been a victim of Internet crime, please file a complaint at

New Technique Utilizing Private Branch Exchange (PBX) Systems To Conduct Vishing Attacks

The FBI
has received information concerning a new technique used to conduct vishingi attacks. The recent attacks were conducted
by hackers exploiting a security vulnerability in Asterisk software. Asterisk is free and widely used software developed to integrate PBXii systems with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP),
digital Internet voice calling services; however, early versions of the Asterisk
software are known to have a vulnerability. The vulnerability can be exploited by
cyber criminals to use the system as an auto dialer, generating thousands of vishing
telephone calls to consumers within one hour.

The vulnerability referred to in this alert is a known vulnerability. Digium, the
original creator and primary developer of Asterisk, released a Security Advisory,
AST-2008-003, in March of 2008, which contains the information necessary for users
to configure a system, patch the software or upgrade the software to protect against
this vulnerability.

If a consumer falls victim to this exploit, their personally identifiable information
(PII) will be compromised.
To prevent further loss of consumers’ PII and to reduce the spread of this new technique,
it is imperative businesses, using Asterisk, upgrade their software to a version
that has had the vulnerability fixed.

Further, consumers should not release personal information in response to unsolicited
telephone calls. Providing your PII will compromise your identity!

If you have been a victim of Internet crime, please file a complaint at
www.IC3.gov.

1. Vishing utilizes caller ID spoofing via VoIP to contact potential
victims in order to gain access to their PII by convincing the victim that the criminal
is associated with a legitimate business with a need to know the victim’s PII.
2. PBX Systems are used by companies to allow telephone calls
between VoIP enterprise users on local lines while allowing all users to share a
limited number of external lines.

This has us in the crazy situation of importing raw almonds from Italy to the US! They grow perfectly good almonds down the street, within the city limits of Fresno, but we have to buy raw almonds from another country! Carrying coals to Newcastle??

It is that wonderful “one world order”, spread the wealth thing.

being as sarcastic as I can be.

Now we must buy almonds, on the local black market and it will soon be in the same class as raw milk.

I wonder how many of these outbreaks come from the cheap labor used in the packing houses. A lot of them use illegals and those folks don’t understand American hygiene principles. Or maybe they don’t care, or worse. Someone in my raw foods group said they were able to buy almonds direct from the grower. As long as you buy less than 200 lbs, you’re okay. <<<

I sold my goat milk labeled, “For pets only, not for human’s”,
in felt pen on the lids.

LOL, guess my customers were not concerned, as the owner of our [then] Health Food Store came to the house to buy it and knew what she was getting.

I ran into her years later and she thanked me for having supplied good goat milk for her little girls and that they had grown up smart and healthy and were now in college.

The lack of quality of food inspection and the general willful ignorance of the damage pesticides can do is astounding.<<<

I fear insecticides, as I over dosed on them in my orchid growing days and ruined my skin, and today, if I walk into a room that has been sprayed, I turn bright red, my heart goes crazy and I can’t run fast enough.

And that was before the emphysema, today it would simply kill me on the spot.

Yes, the big companies rule........but will that continue, or will it be even worse, now that the commie congress has taken control of so many companies?

When the departments in control of our food are run by political appointees, we are going to always be in trouble.

I don’t think that I would like the charred wood, as it tends to stink when wet.

But I would soak the fresh chips in water, make a foil packet, with slits and let the steam give added taste......LOL, might even be re=usable.

If the wood was high resin or oil containing, there would be a fire hazard. I think/fear.

When you buy soap, unwrap it at once and allow it to air dry, yes even the chemical stuff from the store.

When it dries for a year or so, you will never have a mushy bar of soap, it will last longer.

The ad you sent for goat milk soap, is a good price, check it against the store, 3 or her bars is 15 ounces and what are you now paying for store soap by the pound?

Plus she won’t have the un- needed chemicals added to the soap.

I have some that I bought as melt and pour soap and never got time to play with it.

Now, I can’t handle perfumes in soaps.

No, you can’t order soap from where I did, they quit soap and went to perfume, candles and incense perfume. Sorry.

That is a Nubian Goat, my favorite and they have the richest milk and lots of it.

I have owned Nubians, that would give a full 2 gallons of milk a day.

You have no idea how badly I want to have and be able to take care of goats again.

In the past, I always said that if i could have only one animal make it a goat, you can talk to them and they will talk right back.

They are smart and aware of odd dangers....

You can drink the milk, or if there is nothing else to eat, they say they taste good.......LOL, I never tried the meat, we had beef and pork and I wasn’t interested in eating my milk stock.

Lucy, a nubian, would go for a walk with me at night, but she would not go out of the cone of light, that the street light we had installed in the middle of our property, about 400’ foot of the light, she would stop at the edge of the light and chatter at me, until I came back.

She was right of course, as snakes were a real danger and also dope smugglers and illegals.

When my niece got suddenly very ill and the local Doctor did not know what was wrong with her, said she needed tests that he could not do, in a small town office.

We called Diana to come and get her.

Mitzi opened the trailer door, [magnetic latch] and came in, she went to where Angela was laying on the couch, and she sniffed the air all the way around her, then turned to me and started talking.

If I had not known that Angela had a high fever and was very sick, I would have after Mitzi told me.

They never did find out what was wrong with her.

The Worlds Happiest Green Pepper!

Okay, this particular item really isn't about goats but I felt that it is something that is totally unique and should be shared. This photo has not been altered other than the water mark I placed on it.

My wife was fixing dinner the other night and sliced this green pepper only to be greeted with a green pepper smiling back at her.

I guess it's safe to say that a healthy pepper is a happy one! Hope you enjoy the picture. Rick McCoy

I have wanted to raise stock animals for a long time, probably ever since I read Heidi as a young girl LOL.

Here are some more pictures:

http://www.mbfarviewfarm.com/Nubian-Dairy-Goats.htm

This is Nubian dairy goat is named Valentina. She is a registered Nubian dairy goat. She was the mother of triplet bucks this yr. She is one of our top producing Nubian goat does.

This is my baby Velvet. She is a registered Nubian goat Doe. She was raised by me. She doesn't know she is a goat, she is more like a dog. I guess she spent too much time with our border collie female who would bathe her daily.

This is our Sophia. She is also a registered Nubian dairy goat. She is so sweet. She is always at the gate waiting for me to pet her.

I guess the dogs learn to get along with the goats? The GoatFinder website had a listing for renting goats to clear grass and shrubs to reduce fire danger. Every summer the owner of the mobile home park has to mow for days to clear all the grass (14 acres!). Such a waste! If he'd fence better, he could use goats, but then the owner is kinda busy or odd or lazy or something.
The minimal barbed wire fence he has wouldn't keep them in, I bet. 10th
