Large Hadron Collider: Does every particle in the universe consist of points, strings, or loops?

String theorists state that electrons, photons, protons, and all other particles are not zero-dimensional point-like objects (which form the basis of the Standard Model) but rather tiny one-dimensional extended objects that behave like strings. A group of strings vibrate at a specific resonant frequency -- similar to the movement of strings to produce different sounds on musical instruments such as the violin and guitar -- depending on what type of particle they are, such as electron, photon, proton, and so forth. Over the years, string theorists have not generated any experimental data based on fundamental physical law that proves or disproves their theory... Recently, several alternate models have been suggested. One, in particular, is called Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). It uses loops, objects that are even more fundamental than strings. Space-time, itself, could be constructed of these fundamental particles, which are predicted to behave very closely to particles of matter. LQG predicts ten or eleven dimensions of the universe rather than the multitude of dimensions with one-dimensional particles of String theory and the four dimensions (three in space and one in time) with zero-dimensional particles of the Standard Model. So far, most cosmologists do not support Loop Quantum Gravity theory. However, future experiments that are soon to be carried out could resolve if particles exist as points, strings, or loops. If particles are found to exist in one of these forms, then actual physics could be applied to a viable theory of the universe.

It is scheduled to begin operations in November 2007. When it becomes fully operational in 2008 it will be the world’s largest and highest energy particle accelerator. The 17-mile (27-kilometer) ring-shaped tunnel will collide two beams of protons head-on at speeds so great that conditions will be created similar to the first moments after the Big Bang, the theory on which the creation of the universe is based.

Points, strings, and loops. Is that the choice? No bundles?

Could be, but the math is not so cute.

You have to be careful reading that title if your eyes are tired. In my case I read it with the d and r swapped on Hadron.

Hey, they only do that kind of research at certain kinds of social clubs.

What exactly is the point of trying to get a general theory of everything, anyway (the whole reason for string theory)?

Steven Hawking established his theory about Black holes saying that they are the force that holds Galaxies together and gives them their characteristic rotation.

He also believes that matter, aka. 'information' is lost as it crosses the Event Horizon and is consumed by the Black Hole.

New findings show that the New Universal Model is comprised of 3 general components; Atoms, Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Which in combination, are causing the Universe to accelerate, contrary to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Which in itself, points to the general law of Physics that the Universe should be gradually slowing down.

Hawking recently changed his hypothesis to add that Information is not lost in Black Holes. (The Information Paradox) Due to opposition by many in his guild that points to this Paradox.

This may then relate to the idea that matter, (Information) merely travels into another dimension. They may also alternate back and forth between dimension's in the form of Neutrinos. Also mentioned as a certain aspect of string theory.

Einstein suspected that Quantum Theory existed and it bothered him greatly, which is why he spent his last days on Earth, trying to solve the problem, through his Theory of Everything.

There will always be debate, lacking concrete evidence no matter how strong the argument.

If you read IE Magazine, you would have known of the micro-psi visions of Ledbetter and Bezant. The sub-quark they saw(using matter waves of course), and called the UPA(Ultimate Physical Atom)is an involuting/evoluting torus of 10 lines(or coiled strings) : 3 bright white, 7 rainbow colored. 2 1/2 turns thru the solenoid core.

It also vibrates/beats like a living heart. 3 UPAs make up a quark(U or D), but the fractional charges are(supposedly)something like 4/9ths, 5/9ths; weird. But maybe not, from the quantum Hall effect there are also fractional charges like 4/7ths, 2/5ths, and they are associated with MATTER WAVES as well.

Ledbetter and Besant also discovered Neon 22(rare isotope)before nuclear scientists did. This lends credence to their work that some would pass off as nothing more than wild imagination...

So, there it is : "strings" as coiled up "dimensions", seen using micro-psi from 1910 - 1930; psychics were WAY out ahead of plodding scientists/theory-types.

You must have been thinking of Harvard's Lisa Randall:
