Over the next five years, Oracle is predicting annual growth of 12 percent for the open source OS
Linux adoptions are to grow in the next three to five years at nearly triple the rate of Windows, according to Oracle.
In an interview at the LinuxWorld conference in Sydney, the database company suggested Linux deployments had grown beyond an adoption phase, and were now becoming ubiquitous in small and large businesses alike.
Monica Kumar, director of Oracle's Linux programme office, pointed to the open source operating system becoming mainstream as "businesses are looking to Linux as a way to save money," and quotes a projected annual growth rate of 11.7 percent over the next five years. The software heavyweight claims analysts project Windows' growth over the same period as being 3.6 percent per year.
"We don't come across many big companies these days that don't have a Linux strategy, which is in contrast to the market three years ago," says Kumar.
It's not just enterprise customers leading the charge, though. "Small [companies] are now betting their businesses on Linux".
Kumar points to market awareness and a growing number of Linux-savvy developers in developing countries to drive the uptake, and suggests open standards are a huge driver.
"Linux is mainstream. There are a lot of questions that we used to get maybe two years ago where people used to say: 'Is Linux really ready for the enterprise? Can you give me some proof points? Who's deploying it? ...I need to prove the ROI or TCO to my CIO about Linux'. It's been two years and I don't get that question anymore."
She also goes on to point out a shift in adoption drivers: from the developers at the front line to the CIOs.
"We're now seeing adoption driven from the CIOs, instead of from the individual developers, and it's allowing Linux to pick up momentum."
The company has recently released a free version of its flagship database product in an attempt to woo developers towards Oracle technologies.

Yes they do, and have, as my link showed, and I have others if you think you can dispute the one I already provided. They are probably projected to fall some over the next few years to 60%, but I wouldn't bet on it, since they've been predicted to fall before but never really have.
Funny you would try to claim I'm the one lying, when as normal newbie and ziggy have once again been exposed on this thread as the ones posting BS.
Simple, that's right about when newbi3 showed up here and started posting all his linux lies, just as he tried on this thread. For some reason, he loves to spread lies about linux, and put down Microsoft and others who compete with it. Too bad for him, I never let him get away with it. You'd think after a while he'd quit trying, but some people are just habitual.
Fixed it for you..
The conversation was not the OS on systems sold the conversation you brought in meaningless statistics which had nothing to do with the covnersation. Depsite the fact I made a guess and called it as much my answer to a question was still correct using your numbers.
Your failure to follow the conversation and understand some basic concepts does not mean people were lying..
Amazing how your lies never end. You didn't make a guess, you knew it was BS when you posted it.
Here's a thread from last year where I pointed it out to you TWICE.

There's also a different link on that page, from 2005 showing MS with 69.6 percent of server shipments.

So, what lies can you make up now to try to weasel out of this?
So I'm going to give you a chance to sit at the grownup table for a change, here was Jeff's original question:
"To be fair, isn't measuring rate of growth sort of misleading when it comes comparing large bases to smaller bases? "
So is Linux getting a 12% growth significant compared to MS 3.6%?
DOD, too.
Windows is pirated, probably more than Linux is given away. It's very close to the same thing - a free copy that someone else is trying to sell.
Weasel all you want, your original claim that Microsoft only had 40% of any server market any way you want to measure it was BS, and you knew it when you posted it.
Well, for those interested, here are some interesting statistics...
I went to the page posted by Flaming Death, and saved it to disk and deleted everything after the Brass Buzzard's devolution to trolldom. Then I ran the following command:

That pretty much looks like a normal Freeperr posting history. A scattering of posts on a variety of subjects.
GE's last post as a normal Freeper was on 06/23/2002. Almost a year passes before another post is made 05/28/2003, and GE has been a Johnny-one-note troll ever since.
Now let's take a look at her posting history after some witch transformed her into a really lame troll:
1 BIN LADEN'S JULY 4 TERROR BROADCAST ^
1 Novell Puts the Lie to SCO's Linux Attack ^
13 UPDATE - Microsoft loses city of Munich deal to Linux ^
3 SCO says it will show code in Linux dispute ^

Since that time, a lot has happened in the world, but you'd never know it if you lived in GE's tiny universe of anti-open source trolldom.
Weasel all you want, your original claim that Microsoft only had 40% of any server market any way you want to measure it was BS, and you knew it when you posted it.
Hey I said it was a guess, If me speaking in the simpilest terms will help move the conversation along Fine Ill say it clearly "40% was a SWAG and could be wrong". As to the weasel part you *STILL* have not answered the question the the adults were throwing around...
Jeff's original question:
"To be fair, isn't measuring rate of growth sort of misleading when it comes comparing large bases to smaller bases? "
So is Linux getting a 12% growth significant compared to MS 3.6%?
I will do that. Thank you!
What's wrong? You don't like it when I nuke newbi3's endless lies like Windows only has 40% market share, or his bogus claim repeated infinitely that Microsoft has cut off all support to Windows 2000 even though you can still download security updates till 2010? Probably, but it's got a lot with how I blow up your BS as well, like yesterday when you kept claiming the VMWARE kernel is Linux.
At least you boys are starting to say "I guess" or "I'm pretty sure" LOL. Maybe one day you'll actually find out if it's the truth or not before you even open your trap.
I already pointed this fact out to you before, several times, so saying you're now guessing because you don't know any better sounds like another lie.
You mean lies like all Chinese supercomputers run Red Flag Linux?
Stats and marketshare can be bantered around all day and nobody is likely to be caught in a real lie about them since interpretations and sources differ, but your unqualified, absolute lie above is pretty inescapable.
TUX is a magazine geared towards new Linux users.
OK. Thank you!
Your links refer to saold units not deployments..
Hey if I was wrong that all Chinese supercomputers run Red Flag Linux, I apologize for the mistake. It was an easy honest mistake to make, since the free copies of Red Hat the Chinese rename to Red Flag are the official operating system of the chinese government, at least according to sources like Linux Journal.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5116
My basic point remains - Chicomm supercomputers do run Linux, including the improvements they get for free from the US.
But newbi3's lies aren't honest mistakes, nor does he hardly if ever retract or ever admit them. It's just a constant stream, of ridiculous BS, like his coninual claim that Microsoft is no longer releasing security patches for Windows 2000, or that their server share is below 50%. Those are absurd lies he's never retracted or admitted, nor will he probably ever. BIG difference, they aren't mistakes, they're known lies when he spouts them.
