Eighteen rogue planets that seem to have broken all the rules about being born from a central, controlling sun may force a rethink about how planets form, astronomers said on Thursday... "The formation of young, free-floating, planetary-mass objects like these is difficult to explain by our current models of how planets form," Zapatero-Osorio said... They are not linked to one another in an orbit, but do move together as a cluster, she said... Many stars in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, may have formed in a similar manner to the Orion stars, she said. So there could be similar, hard-to-see planets floating around free near the Solar System.

SunkenCiv is right. It is a blast from the past. Since then some scientists have theorized that many gas giants are merely brown dwarfs that never reached the point of nuclear reaction within themselves.
There is a fine line between a massive gas giant planetary body and a brown dwarf star. Until the core reaches 18 million degrees or so, gas giants don't have the pressure to support nuclear fusion.
Interesting story nonetheless. Thanks for the ping.

You know, it's not that hard to imagine many rogue planets cruising through space, looking for another sun to take them under their wing after their own sun disappeared.
Supposed origin of Nibiru of ancient myth, according to Sitchin. Also known as Planet X, the 12th Planet, Marduk, Planet of the Crossing, et al.

Apart from myth, it's not all that hard to imagine many rogue planets cruising through space, looking for another sun to take them under their wing after their own sun disappeared.
My point.
What think?

I'd be pretty surprised if you are wrong. My view about the asteroid bits and pieces (apparently quite a lot of it) which are in orbits out of the ecliptic is that they may be primordial, and what we call the ecliptic got that way because of captures of passing bodies, including the one we live on. :')
