Ok thanks. I will just keep looking. I know I read it somewhere... at some point in the past twenty years... but now that I opened my big mouth at the range of course I can find nothing to back up my memory.

I just "watched" a couple of documentaries on the Mongols and the Japanese, but I guess I should have paid more attention...I'm sure they mentioned it, as they "explained" the "uniform." But I would think that a billowing cloak would render an arrow harmless, if the conditions were right. Of course, the speed of the horse would have to be quite swift...

10 minutes is all -- and I was there week before last when it was MINUS 17 F when I got in the car in the am.
That was the coldest day ever in Denver.
Yesterday, it was in the 60s -- much better (especially since I am walking to work now).

Minus -17 the coldest in Denver, EVER?
Whoa!
I can remember some -20's in Central Utah when I was growing up, and that was at 4500'.
The only sink I recall was the Randolf Sink in the Wasatch Range, which usually gets REALLY cold ~~ -20 is "normal" for that place.

I found it! I found it!
"O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' She chortled in her joy.
Under a quilted jacket or water-proofed leather jerkin, Mongol warriors wore a silk shirt. Even if an arrow penetrated their armour, unlike other cloth, the silk shirt would not tear but would wrap around the arrow head. This made it easier to remove the arrow and reduced the chance of infection. With cotton, wool or other cloth, bits of torn material would be driven into a wound making a dangerous infection likely.
Thereby providing me with an excellent reason to buy silk shirts.

I remember -20F in Michigan, with high winds and a mile walk to school. They didn't calculate wind chill in those days, all I knew was... it... was... cold!
