This is your first warning.

Do not try and resist.

It is useless.

Y'know? That's really wierd...my post to sionnsar was actually addressed to you, Alice, Bob and TC,as well, but only his name showed up. How odd...

And it's a scary feeling to start to slide and not be able to stop...

Especially downhill towards Eliot Bay... with only a Metro bus to stop you.

Yep! And the instructions they give you don't really help too much, do they?

"Steer in the direction of the skid." -- Duh! If I wanted to go in that direction, I wouldn't be worried about the skid!

But there is Physics involved. Once your tires are locked and sliding, you cannot stop effectively, and you cannot steer at all. So turn them in the direction of the skid so they can begin to rotate again, and then apply steering and braking gradually until you resume the correct direction of travel.

This takes time -- and that's why it's important to slow down -- to give yourself more time to react and get out of trouble.

It makes more sense, and comes more naturally, once you've done it a few times. It can even be worthwhile to go to a safe place to practice, before you have to undergo the real-world test of driving in bad conditions.

Yah...we lived at the top of a hill in Central Utah when I was growing up. I learned how to drive in the snow on that hill. And it's one of those things one never forgets. Like riding a bicycle.

I went outside just now, and for some reason, I was surprised when I saw green things instead of snow. Go figger. :o|

Having eight inches of snow on the ground in central PA on Thanksgiving morning, with overnight temps in the singles, I was quite surprised to see patches of grass when we left on Sunday.

But Maryland is still relatively Winterstorm free.

The February we lived in the DC area the schools were closed for two days because of snow. I always expect the unexpected when it comes to the weather. :o]

I'm glad your trip was made safely. You WERE missed by those of us still "here."

Gosh, Thanks! To my own surprise, going "cold turkey" with internet withdrawal was not quite as bad since I had warm turkey to make up for it, but I missed you guys too!

I felt like a Borg with my implants non-functional. Speaking of which, how is it the Borg look so ugly with those gadgets sticking out of their flesh, when they could have made them sub-microscopic using nanotechnology, humh?

Answer: Because they were the bad guys. They had to look ugly, except for Seven of Nine, of course.

Hey folks!

How are you today?

Did you hear the Canadian Liberal government is going to fall in a non-confidence vote tonight?

There is a live thread on breaking.

Woo-Hoo!!!

How are you this fine morning? (Technically, it's afternoon for me, but I'm flexible.)

Hi, Alice! Okay I guess... the day started off okay, but went downhill. First a nasty "outbreak" on one of my committees last week which needs to be contained (I hate all this politics). Then I zapped my miniature travel mouse -- it is quite dead. I've been drawing sparks all day (more than usual) and when I sat back down at my desk and touched the mouse... that was it. Oh well...

Heard on the radio that we're now up to a snow advisory.

No...my daughter wants me to go to Vegas, and my brother wants me to go to Phoenix. My daughter says Hobbes can come and my brother says she can't.

I won't stay overnight unless she's with me.

Drat! I was looking forward to watching people try to navigate the hills of downtown in the snow. It was a hoot watching it a couple of years ago. They finally got a clue and closed off most of the hills, since too many cars were sliding sideways down the hills toward the bay. :-)

I remember being downtown (Seattle) about 20 years ago and watching the same.

It can even be worthwhile to go to a safe place to practice, before you have to undergo the real-world test of driving in bad conditions.

The goodwife said that in driver training in Sweden they'd go out on the lakes in winter to practice.
