I've been thinking...
The launch is going to be exciting, and settling into orbit on a revolving habitat will be fun. Our return to the Moon should be magnificent, as the brightly illuminated orb slips by just miles below us at about sixty thousand miles per hour.
But then ... eight months?
What the heck are we gonna do to stay busy? Oh, I know King Prout will be able to occupy himself, and Tax-Chick will be busy with a bun in the oven and her home schooling. I'll be poring over my books and poetry when I'm not up in the "Wheel House."
Monkey Face will have her books too, and her astonomy, and lots of folks will be into gardening. I'm sure we'll have cooking classes, and other interesting home-grown instructional material, and of course we'll spend a lot of time visiting with each other and ... Hmmm.
Never mind, I withdraw the question.

I have a bin full of half-done craft projects. We could play poker for pretzel sticks.

I think it's inherently a right choice that interstellar (or interplanetary, in this case) exploring should be done by whole communities.
The way I see it, if you picked a handful of scientists, chemists, astronomers, and such, and set them out on a decades long quest, they would have to train the next generation to take over their duties when they came of age.
Except that the children would be songwriters, artisans, poets, blacksmiths, dentists, traffic cops, postal employees, and horticulturists.
You need a really large community in order to let everyone fill the niche he is most able, and comfortable with.
So maybe if you start out with gardeners and musicians, you'll end up with scientists and astronomers.

I have returned! Finally!
I've been busy shoveling things off of my desk and on to anyone else's before we leave for vacation.
I'm not going to bother to read the posts between the time I left on Monday to now. What's happening on the UT, tonight?

So maybe if you start out with gardeners and musicians, you'll end up with scientists and astronomers.I think if you have a large enough group of reasonably intelligent and curious people, no matter what their background, a significant number will eventually take an interest in every field of study. With all the time we'll have, even I could struggle through the math to become competent in some scientific field.

I'm goint to bed ... with the unusual heat and humidity the last couple of days, my toes look like Vienna sausages. We'd better get the cold front soon!

"What's happening on the UT, tonight?" I just came to the realization that our propsed trip to Mars is actually the equivalent of a sea-cruise. Tax-Chick and I were talking about "ship-board" entertainments.
No shuffleboard.

We've had a monumental front move in this evening. It was about 73 degrees this afternoon when we left for ballet. By the time we got home from swim practice, it was 43 degrees.
I'll bet you'll get the cold front, too.
Go put your piggies to bed in an ice bath...or on a hot water bottle filled with cold water, salt, and ice. That was one of my favorite tricks during my summer pregnancies.

Darts would be challenging! We'll be in a one-third gee field, and we'd have to consider coriolis effects.
More difficult than pool (billiards for some).

Prout and our older brother have invented rules that accelerate the play of the game by rewarding assertiveness. If you ask him, he'd probably send them to you.
