Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I was impressed at how well the characters came through in two hours. I almost felt like I'd seen the show, they were that well drawn.

Ronald Reagan used to tell it. I can't remember it exactly.
But one Christmas morning a little boy woke up and all he saw was a hugh pile of manure. He got a shovel and started digging.
His father asked him why.
"With all this manure, there's got to be a pony in here somewhere."

Also the captain is cute. Oh, yeah, Mal's easy on the eyes, all right.
I just love the dialogue, and the way they deliver it is just great. It occurred to me that the ensemble did so well in the movie precisely because they had that year together to hone all those relationships. They are just characters you love, and you hate to see anything bad happen to them. And there was some seriesly cool flying, too!

I love the whole 'frontier' feel of the show!Yes, it had a real "retro" feel, almost "steampunk" in nature.
For anyone wondering, "steampunk" is a sub-genre of science fiction, featuring relative high-tech set in Victorian or Old West times. Steam-powered robots and the like.

Yes, I was really impressed with the directing and writing... except for the little bit at the start introducing River and her brother (which basically recapped the major story arc of the first season) they didn't have to do a lot of explaining or back-tracking.

Yes, exactly! I was going to offer that as an example, actually. Although the series predates the term "steampunk", which originated in the 80s or early 90s I think. The phrase derives from "cyberpunk", which first appeared in the 80s, and describes a sub-genre of SF set generally in a dystopian near-future, where people can "jack into" a world-wide computer network (think "Matrix").
Whoa, deja vu... I think I've explained this before on the thread.

They are just characters you love, and you hate to see anything bad happen to them. Yeah, Whedon went all Orson Scott Card on us. Not sure if I like that yet.
To: Lil'freeper; JenB; RosieCotton; SuziQ
Makes me wonder if he would have done that in series, if it had continued. It wouldn't be the first time for him, he did it in "Buffy"....
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I don't think he would have been so bold so soon. He had so many backstories and history to give us. He'd let us get reeeeeeeeally attached to the characters before being so brash.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I liked it. Of course, I was more upset about the ship getting trashed, I didn't think they'd get it repaired. And I didn't really know who the character was... not really, he seemed nice but that's all.
Steampunk is good. I hadn't thought of it as steampunk but there are some similarities...

I was already kinda attached.
My brother actually watched the series...he was pretty ticked off, though he thought the movie was wonderful.
The worst of it is, if this is a big success and they go back and make more episodes or movies...well, it's not like they can bring people back.

I liked that piece with Simon and River at the beginning. Since we never saw them before they appeared on the ship, it was interesting to see how Simon used his money and connections to free his sister. I also liked how the movie was largely about her. We never saw enough of substance about her in the series.
