Yes, I was really impressed with the directing and writing... except for the little bit at the start introducing River and her brother (which basically recapped the major story arc of the first season) they didn't have to do a lot of explaining or back-tracking.

I liked that piece with Simon and River at the beginning. Since we never saw them before they appeared on the ship, it was interesting to see how Simon used his money and connections to free his sister. I also liked how the movie was largely about her. We never saw enough of substance about her in the series.
