Hmm, any way they could possibly have taxied out without using the brake system?

Sure. The article referred to nose-wheel steering, and they were accelerating, after all. But it was probably something that should have been checked as they taxied.
Most likely, they applied brakes on both sides at the same time, and didn't disclose the crossed plumbing.

Come to think of it, that's something I wouldn't have checked.
Yikes.

I can't imaging not using the brakes to increase nosewheel steering effectiveness. But I've never flown an F111.

It was a wood flexible flyer runner sled.
Crashed a few times before figuring out that it was strangely reversed.

Logically speaking, the slow speed steering is most effectively done using the nose wheel. In really tight quarters, one might use the brakes to make a very tight turn, but with plenty of space, who would?
The advantage of individually applied braking of the main landing wheels comes at exactly the point these pilots discovered their problem, the high-speed coasting in after landing, while the nose wheel may not even be touching, or be lightly loaded. It is good that they had a cushion of extra room on the side to allow this error to be less than life-threatening, and that they realized so quickly what the problem was.
Another example of their quick thinking was the time frame of when the problem was reported. What good would it have done to report the problem where it couldn't be fixed?

I saw one tulip and one of those flowers opening up today when I was walking across campus. The rest were still waiting to open.

*chuckle*
Hence the arboreal impact damage noted with the sleds.
I have a talent for finding trees.
