Channel 11 news staff ^

Posted on 11/12/2004 11:15:41 AM PST by Orange1998

KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from a classic rock format to a Latino music format branded as Mega 101.

KLOL is now branded as Mega 101 FM. The station's web site was listed as under construction, but KLOL's former morning show hosts Walton and Johnson announced on their web site that they were informed Thursday night of the change.

The radio hosts stated on WaltonandJohnson.com that, "Thursday night Walton and Johnson were informed by lower-level management sources via a last-minute phone call that there would be no Walton and Johnson Show tomorrow. In it's place would be Hispanic music programs."

Don't be shocked. It's the takeover of the USA going on right before your eyes. They don't want to hear English at all so English has to go.

The same thing is happening here --- and it's not just whites complaining --- many hispanic kids hate the foreign music --- they like rock and other American music if they're American --- many kids say they will leave town when they can --- and very many do just that. It's becoming just like Mexico with a lot of migration out going on --- and the only ones coming in are from Mexico.

Why isn't there at least one Spanish rock station?

Because rock songs sound goofy in Spanish and hispanic kids who like rock like the real thing. They're not going to listen to bands from Mexico any more than anyone else is --- they want American and British rock the same as everyone.

Yep, I had a roomate who was second generation and raised in Fresno. He and his pals had no love for Norteno music or Mariachi, and he himself preferred country and rock. One thing I've found with Mexican Americans is that love for their "ancestral" music only lasts for the first generation. As you indicated, however, there is an never ending supply of first generation immigrants in Texas, so we have the situation we are in now.

I don't fault the radio station owners for following the money. Classic rock is a dying demographic.

Same question can be asked as to why there is no black artist rock and roll on BET.

It allows people to not bother to learn english and reduces the number of stations that native english speaking americans can listen to.

You should live where I live. I can go all day without hearing any English at all --- go to the stores and the announcements are done in Spanish, go just about anywhere and no one is speaking English --- the English speakers --- hispanic and non-hispanic have moved away --- except in the workplace -- that's about half and half now. Half the classrooms in the schools near here are Spanish only.

What is this, the fourth or fifth time since the late 1950s that "mainstream" media has declared rock "dead"?

THEY are the ones actively trying to replace it all the time.

A lot of hispanics I know aren't first generation --- many never did come from Mexico and their families have lived in the USA for many many generations. They of course speak English and are American culturally --- but with the change over to all Spanish --- the ones moving in won't even have any exposure to anything American. They won't have anyone to learn English from --- and that's a big problem.

What doesn't make sense --- you see them changing 10 stations over to latino hip-hop that are all the same --- and of course 10 norteno stations that are all the same and maybe one or two old-timers music --- (mariachi and the old ballads) --- but there are almost no English stations left. It's even more bland and monotonous than ever but they claim somehow they're making money this way. I don't see how.

this land used to belong to Mexico

That's what it all comes down to --- Mexico ran it for about 25 years (not very well) and they want it back. It's not about Mexicans coming here to be Americans and embrace the American culture and language --- it's all about taking it back for Mexico.

When I was in Del Rio three years ago, I had a choice of 5 Norteno stations, 1 Classic Rock station that played Freebird 6 times in two hours (!) and National Public Radio. That had to be the worst choice of stations I have ever been faced with.

I don't know why there can't be a good mix of stations --- instead of 5 norteno stations that all play the same thing --- why not 1 good new rock, 1 good old rock, 1 hip hop, 1 new country, 1 old country, 1 norteno station. Then everyone has something to listen to.

Maybe it's like someone pointed out earlier --- everyone who can is going with XM radio where they have real choices and FM is going the way of AM. Even here AM went to the Mexicans a while back --- no one listens to AM anymore except for 2 talk stations.

Because they are shifting white listeners to satellite radio. Cable television didn't have commercials on the pay channels in the early years either.

Seems like they focused on the demographic most likely to pay for radio and gave us the boot (musically, sports/political talk remain) from the broadcast spectrum.

Local busineses will have to learn Spanish or pony up money to advertise on tv or in the daily or weekly paper.

FROM THAT FORUM:
Tim,
Thanks for the email. Clear Channel has been an effective strategic partner of XM Radio in the past -- contributing financial support (original investment), programming and operational support. In 2003, Clear Channel engaged in a forward sale of their XM Radio holdings (approximately 8.3 million shares) and as of May 2004 Clear Channel no longer participates as a member of the XM Radio Board of Directors.

The programming decisions of Clear Channel at individual radio stations have nothing to do with XM Radio or how we operate our business. XM is poised to end 2004 with more than 3.1 million subscribers and are on the way to 20 million subscribers in 2010. If anyone in Houston in interested in great music (rock or otherwise) I would suggest they try out XM Radio and discover what deep play lists, intelligent on-air talent and no commercials sounds like.

Thanks for the heads up on KLOL. I am not sure what happened but the link provided no longer works.

XM Investor Relations,

There seems to be a lot of mis-information avaialble on the net in regards to the ownership percentage of Clear Channel and their role at XM.

It is out on the net that at one time they owned 30% and were sitting back ready to take XM over if $$ troubles continued, there are other reports that they own less than 3% and other than some talk programming they have nothing to do with XM.

The reason I bring this up, is that on Friday Clear Channel pulled the plug on KLOL ROCK 101 in Houston. I think a lot of people are clearly disgusted with Clear Channel for what they have done with FM radio around the country. I think a lot of listeners will look to XM and Sirius as alternatives and your affiliation with CC no matter how small or insignificant may affect their purchase decision.

Check out www.klol.info for radio listeners reactions to CC pulling the plug on one of Houston's favorite stations. Their is also a discussion of the link between XM and Clear Channel.

Thanks in advance for the information.

Tim

I would be really surprised if PAY RADIO didn't have advertising by 2010.

Also from that forum:

http://www.rockaid.com/speakout/index.php?showtopic=298

CC still has holdings within XM.

The language is: "The Company{clear channel communications, inc.} holds a net purchased option (the “collar”) under a secured forward exchange contract that limits its exposure to and benefit from price fluctuations in XM Satellite Radio Holding, Inc. (“XMSR”) over the term of the contract. "

The backup is their November 2004 SEC10Q form. It can be found here:

SEC QUARTERLY REPORT: CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS, INC. ( For the quarter ended September 30, 2004 )

I guess if I wanted to live in Mexico, I would have moved over there. And all this is more about lack of appreciation of the American culture which created the wealth they're all seeking.
