Hi PAL! I'm at work. But today has been very hectic. I've been trying to finish up my current projects and getting some new projects for my last day. But they only get me for 3 more hours. My supervisors did take me to lunch. :-)

While my sister-in-law was here from California and I was on vacation, we toured the Truman home (sorry, he's from here), and the Vaile mansion, both historical sites. There is one other historical home I wanted to see, Bingham-Waggoner home, but we ran out of time. Also went to a craft show.

The Vaile mansion was hired to be built by Mr. Vaile, a lawyer, took 2 years to build in the 1890's, and has 14 ft ceilings, on about 1,500 acres (or was it 15,000?). There is detailed painting on the ceilings in bright colors. The ceiling in Mrs. Vaile's bedroom was originally painted with a naked woman. The Vaile's rehired the painter to paint clothes on her after the housekeeper told the towns people and the towns ladies would no longer visit Mrs. Vaile. The fireplace mantle in the dining room is carved from Vermont marble, Mr. Vaile's home state. The marble mantle in the front north room is Italian marble. The home had indoor plumbing and it's own water tower so they did not have to travel to the Missouri River for water. The chandeliers are original to the home. Mrs. Vaile had cancer and committed suicide with an overdose. They lived in the home about 2 yrs (I think) and were still working on the 3rd floor billiard and ball room. The Vaile's had no children. The home was willed to a girls school or college but they were not able to afford it and all the furniture was auctioned. The period furniture presently in the mansion is all donated. One marble clock was returned with the original auction papers. After the school flopped, it became a mental hospital and lobotomies and shock treatments were performed in one of the back rooms on the 2nd floor. It was also a nursing home. The nieces and nephews eventually won a court case and the home was back in the family but was donated to the city of Independence when those owners died with, again, no children.

Yeah. I have to cut back on the junk food and sugar. And start aerobics again. I gained weight this summer - only 5 lbs, but I gotta watch it so I don't gain more.

I know, 40 lbs. ago that's how my extra weight found me - 5 lbs at a time.
