Brian Philp has spent 34 years quietly amassing evidence to support his theory that Noviomagus, a small "trading post" town on a busy Roman route between London and the south coast, lies beneath fields next to St John the Baptist church in West Wickham, Kent. Academics now say that his theory is so strong there should be a full excavation of the site... The location of Noviomagus has tantalised historians for centuries because it is well-documented in Roman records but no credible material evidence has ever been found... The scholar Robert Talbot suggested Old Croydon as a possible site of Noviomagus as long ago as 1540... [I]n the 19th century... Thomas Crofton Croker told the Society of Antiquaries of London that a tomb he had found at Keston, Kent, was part of a temple in Noviomagus... Mr Philp discovered the site in 1966. He said: "I realised where Noviomagus was when I directed a survey of areas threatened by Ringway C, the early plan for the M25. We found some pottery while walking through the fields, so we dug trenches and found traces of wooden buildings and internal roads. Edna and I were discussing the field work one Sunday evening in early 1966 when I realised the significance of it all." ...Mr Philp suspects that the town covered as much as 30 acres, and housed between 500 and 1,000 people.
