Replica of Roman murder victim
The skull had a wound caused by a weapon
The face of a man murdered 1,700 years ago in Cumbria has been reconstructed for a museum exhibition. The skull, which had a hole caused by a weapon, was discovered during building work at The Lanes shopping centre, in Carlisle.
The city's Tullie House museum was awarded funding from the Local Heritage Initiative to reconstruct his face and it goes on display on Wednesday.
Staff will tell the man's story as part of a Roman death in Cumbria exhibition.
Exhibition curator Tim Padley said: "The poor man - named Duncan by the excavators - must have been killed unlawfully as the skull has a small entry and large exit would visible, probably cause by a weapon of some kind and there were the remains of facial injuries.

"Also he was found buried inside the city. All lawful burial had to take place outside the city or the magistrates who allowed it as well as the family of the deceased would face a hefty fine."
The museum decided they wanted to know what 'Duncan' looked like and also wanted a replica of the skull to display in the museum and turned to specialists at Manchester University.
Mr Padley said: "It was off to Manchester with a box containing the skull. We were glad we were not stopped by the police - it would have taken a bit of explaining to say we were taking a murder victim to Manchester to get his face rebuilt."
The exhibition runs at the museum until 24 October.
This guy would fit right in THE SOPRANOS.
Moved to chat? Archeology? Blam, has this been happening to your posts lately? I look forward your posts, and "chat" means "the round file".
I am sure the administrators had to move Blam's most interesting posts to chat to make room for the hundreds of mindless vanities that are posted daily in the News/Activism forum.
I'm pretty sure that guy works at the pizza joint by my house.
GGG Ping.
You're confusing history with archeology. History happened a long time ago. Archeology is happening now, and finds are most certainly news. The reconstruction pictured above has been recently created for a museum exhibit. Chat, indeed!
Is all science coming off the front page?
Looks like Tony to me...
Most of the archaeology/anthropology articles I post are usually from 'news of the day', minus a day or so in some cases.
I highly recommend that you get on the ping list, then it doesn't matter where they move the articles. Blam's archeology articles are a welcome break from the idiocy of politics.
No I'm telling you how the Mods look at it. This has been a two year battle between me and the mods. I've had friends banned or essentially driven off because of the mods moving their threads. I know they are trying to get things out of news and into the general forum. It's a worthless effert if you ask me but if there is one thing I've learned over the last two years is my voice counts for nothing around here.
I really dislike being on too many ping lists, but if this has been ongoing, there's no telling how many interesting articles I've missed. I count on FR to be a clipping service, so I don't have to scan too many other sites to get the skinny.
But I don't have a vote, either, so I suppose there's no point in blathering on about it.
A shortcut to being on the ping lists is to use the indexing. I index them when I ping. Click on the link in my ping post and that will take you to the index page that you can stick in your favorites list.
I'm thinking Phil Collins or Bob Hoskins. Both Brits right?
