Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Sheesh! High skul Engrish...Mrs. is gradin' her finals and research papers. I can assure you she cares. But a whole pack o' students think she's a real b*tch these days. She ain't lettin' 'em get away with nothin'.
She's also starting out teaching 'em research at the begining of the year next year.
See this is where I still have some problems with homeschooling (even though we're likely to be going that way with Luke). Wife is having to re-teach a whole bunch of stuff these kids should know. And in a lot of cases, the parents are stickin' up fer the kids.

Looks like we're getting into the Burgh around 3pm. We're gonna take David out for supper, so would it be ok to get together after that? I'm thinking we'll get to the hotel, change and go for supper around 4:30 or 5, so Clare would be free around 6:30 or 7:00. That's not too late for y'all to go do something is it? Freepmail me your cell #, so I can call you when we get there.

And this concerns you about homeschooling because............? Because this is stuff these kids should know by the time they get to this class. Don't get me wrong. I doubt they know it in public school either.
But they should simply be further along than they are.
And, to be fair, it's not across the board. Some students are excelling. She has a 9th grader that she'll be teaching privately next year because she's already past some of the 11th graders.

Don't get me wrong. I doubt they know it in public school either. Most of the students coming into the college here are public schoolers, as you would expect. Trust me...most of 'em aren't learning even BASIC writing skills, like punctuation, sentence structure, and proper capitalization. I would bet on AVERAGE homeschoolers are wayyy ahead of the average public schooler. Certainly there are exceptions to every rule, and homeschooling is only as good as the parents make it...but again, on average I think they get a BETTER education than public schoolers in general.

It was free. It came from a batch of paint we bought for the beach house. It was supposed to be an entirely different color and they messed up the formula.
But it's a good color!

Actually, late works better - I can get in a full day helping out around the house, since it's my stinkin' party that Mom's going nuts over.
I just can't stay too late, since we have church on Sunday. I'll send you the number later in the day, after I look it up.

Actually research papers are often a weak point for homeschool kids. My mom taught a research paper class at our co-op for several years running; one of the high school diploma programs a lot of the kids used required a research paper, and it's amazing how many moms just freeze up... they're fine teaching anything else, but ask them to explain a research paper and they get this "deer in the headlights" look.
But trust me, at least 95% of homeschool kids can read, so I think we're ahead.

But they should simply be further along than they are. So because some publically schooled kids aren't where they should be, and their parents defend them, you're concerned about homeschooling in general?
That doesn't make sense Corin. Your wife would do a wonderful job with Luke AND JR. Sure there'd be days they'd want to kill each other, but that's why God invented Cracker Barrel.
On average if a parent cares enough to homeschool they will care enough to make sure their kids can spell and punctuate.

And in a lot of cases, the parents are stickin' up fer the kids.Well, they don't want to be thought of as doing poorly, do they? ;o)
Writing can be difficult to teach. Most other subjects, with the exception of math, don't really need 'teaching' as much as supervising what the kids read and discussing it with them. Writing needs to be gone over, discussed, and gone over again. Parents of older homeschoolers are sometimes dealing more with their younger ones, or are just TIRED by that time. Not a excuse, just a possible explanation.

My mom must have said a hundred times, "That yellow schoolbus goes right past our driveway! You can be on it tomorrow if you don't shape up!"
Of course, she was more stuck in the house than a lot of homeschool families, since we always had a little one. I'm lucky I only got put through "academic boot camp" once. And none of us ever actually were killed.

So because some publically schooled kids aren't where they should be, and their parents defend them, you're concerned about homeschooling in general? That's not what I said Kevin. The vast majority of the kids my wife is teaching have been homeschooled all their lives.
My point was, we know most public schools suck. All of the arguments I get from homeschoolers is how their kids excel. For the most part, I believe that to be true.
But a good many of these kids (the majority) don't.
