The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Good morning all!

It is gloriously warm here! 53 degrees! But it's windy and apparently gonna get worse...had an alert on my WeatherBug about it even.

OK gives a whole new meaning to the word windy! Every year it's the same...Spring starts coming and WHOOSH! These unbelievable winds hit, blowing just like crazy. And I'm not talkin' gusts...although the gusts can be even worse...I'm talking sustained winds of 45, 50 mph.

I remember one night during "The Big Windy" as Steve and I call it...the entire house creaked under the pressure of the wind and the news said it had times of sustained winds of 90mph. It was incredible.

Well, apparently The Big Windy has begun, which means Spring isn't too far away.

Yeah, the part in the 1300s is pretty dark. It took me awhile to figure out just how far in the future the other part was supposed to be. Threw me for a loop the first time talked on the phone and they described the person on the other end.

I think I need to just ditch the tagline...I'm too confused about this anymore!

Somehow I ended up in some Jewish/Christian realm here on FR carrying on about Mel's movie and Isreal and other vaguely related topics.

I thought I saw you. lol, yeah, I ended up in that warp zone too yesterday. Thanks for the prayers.

I make a recipe my friend brought to me that is similar to your shrimp jalapeno one. Take shrimp and skewer on thin wooden stick, and then lay along the side a strip of jalapeno and a leaf of fresh basil, then wrap in very thin bacon and grill them. The flavor of the basil is vital, and realllly good.

It's actually not that far in the future... 2050-ish, I think. "To Say Nothing of the Dog" has actual dates... basically, time travel is developed in 2018, and Kivrin's part of the second generation of time travellers.

Willis' next novel, (the one she's been writing for THREE YEARS and still hasn't finished) involves some of the same time traveling characters (mostly Mr. Dunworthy) and the Blitz.

2050, yeah. Which is why it confused me...the world isn't different enough for it to be noticeable a lot of the time, but then they've got those video phones and such.

Exactly, other than time travel there don't seem to be many advances. Again, it's more noticably future in "To Say Nothing". One of the few flaws in a brilliant work. If it's a flaw... hard to predict what advances there will be.

The thing that amazes me about Willis is how versatile she is. Doomsday Book is so different from To Say Nothing of the Dog, even though they're in the same "universe". "Passage" is even more different, and weird.

Doomsday's the best but I bet you'll howl with laughter reading To Say Nothing. I did.

Did she write "To Say Nothing of the Dog" before Doomsday?

I'll have to put in a request for that one. It isn't at this library, but it is at one of the other colleges.

No, Doomsday was first. She's written a handful of novels. Her pre-Doomsday work is actually kind of bleak. I'm fond of "Bellwether" but didn't like "Lincoln's Dreams" at all, and the others... let's not talk about them, ok?

After Doomsday she wrote To Say Nothing, and then Passage is her latest. She has also written a lot of short stories. Some are brilliant. Some are icky. Unfortunately, the only short story collection of hers I can recommend wholeheartedly is "Miracle and Other Christmas Stories", which, as the title says, are Christmas stories.

I search the internet every two months or so for info on her next book... all I know is it's to be called "All-Clear", it's about time travel, Mr. Dunworthy, and the Blitz, and she's taking FOREVER to write it. Passage came out in early 2001...

We are supposed to get near 80 here today. I am really not happy about it. Just not ready to meet the summer heat yet, and the A/C bills that come with it. ugh. It seems like we never had a winter this year. (ok, I know I whined about the cold a couple of times, but I do that when it is under 55)

I'm just thrilled. I keep thinking about my laundry and how it won't be freezing on the line and how fast it'll dry in this wind! LOL

A. Where do you live.
B. Have you got a spare room?

Actually, it's warm today. Going to be in the lower 40s!

Heh, probably right, it doesn't get over 95 here most of the time, even in August.

I was wondering how those heating bills compare to my A/C bills. At the end of summer last year my monthly a/c electric was over 350 for August and September, and started to go to mid 200's in October. I have to do something this year to lower that. I have choices in elec. companies now, and need to shop a lower price. And do some better insulation.
