The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

You're my Rainbow Friend...

"What is that?" you ask.

A Rainbow Friend is a special kind of friend.

Each color of the rainbow stands for a different aspect of a Rainbow Friend...

Red stands for the sacrifices you have made for me... Giving up your time from other things to be with me when I really needed it...

Orange stands for the fun times we share together.

Yellow stands for the way you brighten up my life.

Green stands for the way you support me in the things that I do.

Blue stands for the tears I have shared with you.

Violet stands for our trust in each other.

Put them all together, and they are you... My Rainbow Friend!

LowCarb Sour Cream Pancakes! Thanks for that recipe - I must try it. I have been missing pancakes for breakfast so much. My hubby used to make wonderful ones with molasses and cinnamon. Yum! But that was before we started low carbing. Any low carb substitute for molasses that you know of?

Tao of the Renga *

crystals form like fallen ferns
fond memories flirting in time

gone the green essence of life
fine fronds weaving with the wind

feathery wisps of lace blend
with blue skies and autumn hues

light peers through, distant, haunting
an eery pause to reflect

our spirit seeks elusive truths
silence merely mocks with smiles

we yearn to hear the message
only sorrows pierce the calm

* Renga or "linked verse" is Japanese poetry
whereby people take turns adding lines or verses.
One types 7 (or 5) syllables -- not words -- in a line,
which is in turn completed by another person.
Poems can branch off in multiple lines to
form a "kika" or "branched verse".

The selection above, however, was composed
more or less properly(?) by this lone sole who
was inspired by patterns on a car windshield
photographed Nov. 6 in Walla Walla, Washington.
Interested parties are invited, nay encouraged, to
revise and extend my remarks, or lines to that effect.

ORCHARDS

white blossoms 'dorn the apple trees
much like a wedding gown
I watch them falling in the breeze
like pinwheels floating down
       sweet snow upon the ground

     STORM

the wind has circled the island
the sea has changed its course
great waves sculpting the softer sand
lambastes the shore with force
                it seems without remorse

beside clinging vetch
are golden trumpets waking
lift their arms to stretch
           poets wit nor feathered quill 
           have improved the daffodil


flowers of the sea
rainbows of the waxing tide
bright enemone
       all the colors you display
       dancing in a sea ballet

on a  distant plane
smoke is mingling with the clouds
burning bright the cane
            harvesting the sugar crops
            sweetening the candy shops
