The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

I think it is suppose to get to 59 degrees here this afternoon. If this cold fog doesn't lift, it may not make it.

I think if I lived in Alaska, I would be forced to hibernate for the winter! Just get under an electric blanket and stay there until the big thaw. LOL

I wonder what the temps are in Hawaii?

Hey, here is an email my brother sent me ...

Hillary pays a visit to school

Hillary Clinton goes to a primary school to talk about world politics.

After her talk she offers question time.

One little boy puts up his hand, and the Senator asks him what his name is.

"Billy"

"And what is your question, Billy?"

"I have three questions:

(1) How did Vince Foster really die?
(2) Why would you run for President after your husband shamed himself and the office?
(3) Whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House?"

Just then the bell rings for recess.

Hillary Clinton informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Hillary says, "Okay where were we? Oh, that's right, question time. Who has a question?"

Another little boy puts his hand up; Hillary points to him and asks him what his name is.

"Larry"

"And what is your question, Larry?"

"I have five questions.

(1) How did Vince Foster really die?

(2) Why would you run for President after your husband shamed himself and the office?

(3) Whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House?

(4) Why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?

(5) What happened to Billy?

Handling Criticism

Read: Amos 7:7-15

The Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me, "Go, prophesy to My people Israel." —Amos 7:15

As we grow older, we sometimes become set in our ways and unwilling to admit when we are wrong. Worse yet, if we don't see eye-to-eye with others, we become critical of them and try to discredit their views.

Some people, for example, when they disagree with a pastor, seem to be quick to judge motives. They may even suggest that the preacher is only looking for a paycheck.

This type of criticism happened to Amos about 750 BC. The prophet had been preaching a tough message about God's judgment of Israel. Understandably, his message was unpopular. Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, was irritated and told Amos to go back to Judah. Amaziah accused Amos of being a prophet-for-hire, preaching just to make a living (7:12). Amos responded by saying that he was prophesying only because God had told him to speak (v.15).

If we are preaching or leading, we must faithfully serve the Lord as Amos did, even if the task is unpleasant, unpopular, or rejected by our audience. And if we're in the congregation, we need to be sure that when we hear something we don't agree with, we're not actually resisting what the Lord wants us to hear and do.

Interesting craft/visual aid idea for teaching/supplementing language arts/history.

It started with the paperdolls I had bought my daughter and grew. I had figured out how to add accessaries to my daughters paper doll collection by printing out pictures onto Avery Labels and sticking them onto thin cardboard.

Now it has birthed up to creating entire scenes of what we were learning about at the time. We are printing out pictures of scenery (doing Alaska now), downloading and doctoring pictures of eskimos, animals indigenous to Alaska, tools and things like Kayakes, printing them onto Avery Labels, sticking them onto cardboard and cutting them out.

My boys even are trying to make igloos with packing peanuts.

Say goodbye to your dining room table; but I'm seeing excited interactive results.

Kind words are sparkling diamonds
adding beauty, warmth and sending rays  of light to those lost in a sea of
discouragement.
Though a kind word is like a sparkling
diamond it costs nothing to give away
Kind words unspoken are the costliest of all
for the would-be sender never sees the face of a faltering soul light up
with joy and hope.
A kind word is like honey, spreading
sweetness everywhere it goes. Bitterness cannot keep company with
those who have tasted the honey of
a kind word.
A kind word drops gently, ever so gently like dew on the early morning grass
Kind words are like bread cast upon the
water that return to bless the sender over and over again.
Kind words are eternal. Not even death has the power to halt a kind word.
Why is this so?
Kind words are the language of heaven. Would you bring a bit of heaven to earth?
It is as simple as speaking a kind word to your neighbor and to yourself!
