.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Life is no brief candle to me.
It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment,
and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before handing it on to future generations.

(I asked God for a friend, He gave me all of YOU...)
To: All
For still memory comes unbidden,
Strikes at the odd time, flowing
All sudden with force-fresh feeling,
As different from knowing as the ice
From snow. In mere warmth is still
Cold walking, with head held all
Half-sun and dazed, mere warmth which
Sometimes warms, but in comparison
Is frozen, another state of being,
Survival - another way to be.
And so in autumn, when the leaves
Fall orange-golden, like this
Is my contentment; but how god-like
Glorious that moment of full flaming,
Blossoming from skeleton, on fire
Like sudden dawning, just before
The leaves are fallen. This is
My passion, the moment of full-reckoning,
In memory, while unsatisfied
Dazing, it blossoms still
More briefly, before dropping
Once more on the ground.

How come all the poetry pictures are pictures of dames? Sadly, I don't think women these daze are very romantic. My wife was a true lover, a true friend, and unerasably romantic.
I'm just the ink, she was the author:
If time stood still, could we recapture,
The touch, the blush, the joy, the rapture?
The wisdom of love, the heat and the splendor,
when hearts become one and bodies surrender?
I miss my sweetheart more than air.

Good Morning, djf.
Thanks for the lovely poem.
There are pictures of beautiful women; they just seem to gather here. I'll see what I can do about a couple of gentlemanly men as hosts.

Not that I want that.
(pictures of guys)
The piece I quoted is from a failed poem called "Desire", here is the intro:
Desperate days and endless nights,
endless dreams of her delights,
bed as empty as my arms,
hunger for her ruby charms.
My work gets mixed reviews.
Can't help it. Words are my life.

Here is a picture of Joy, a few years before she died.
This was just a date eating bbq on the beach, after that, we bought a house and lived together 10 years, she was even more beautiful the day she died. The most romantic, pristine, loving woman I ever met. The most loving person I ever met, period. So now I try to write about it.

Dreams are doorways
a portal in the night
A surreal open window
letting in wisp light
A changing screen
showing faded memory scenes
A sturdy prop for the heart
upon which to lean
Dreams are doorways
holes in dreamscap sky
Fluffed down pillows
upon which to lie...
