I remember my folks talking about the Great Depression when I was a kid and thinking it was ancient history.

Today it would be comparable to me talking about the Bush/Gore election.

Where did it all go?

The movie pedant is here to say that movie was I Want to Live from 1958. In the movie, the character had it coming, but the movie itself was still anti-death-penalty propaganda.

Carol Burnett did a memorable and hilarious send up on her show, but I can't find a clip.

I don’t think I ever saw that.

I remember, “Why Must I Die” with Terry Moore, I think.

“”I loved her in Back Street. I thought Susan Hayward and John Gavin were perfect.””

Yes - what a movie! Had forgotten all about that. She was a beautiful woman and he was a handsome man.

There are some great old movies that TCM never presents...they usually do the same ones over and over.

69 years here...What changes we’ve seen and gone through, right?

We were very lucky to be educated when we were. The teachers, community leaders and society, have changed so much.

AH HA!
Mention her name and this movie is always the one which
comes to mind. Why always the first, unsure (John Wayne?
filming location?) That the two both died of cancer after
filming here, does make one wonder.

Right - I’m glad to be at the end of the “cycle” and not facing what our grandchildren/great grandchildren have to look forward to...Our own kids won’t even remember the good times for them compared to what’s around the corner.

How did we get here? Good question.

I keep going back to Eddy Arnold’s song:
Make the World Go Away!!!!

I didn’t know that one. I had to look up Susan Hayward to see what movie was being referenced. IMDB is your friend. :)

I think John Wayne died of lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker. Watch Hatari! sometime. In just about every scene someone is smoking. I think I once counted over 40 cigarettes.

Hatari, seen, but really paid little attention to the
cigarettes. McClintock is always beening shown, somewhere.
JW probably does the same in this production.

Do remember, way back when, he stopped, only because his
wife left him (due to his continued habit). He stopped for a time. Eventually, it
was reported cigs had found their way back into his life and
his wife, Pilar, left him once more.
Some old habits a bit harder to break than others.

Her appearance with Charlton Heston was her last public appearance. I read that she had a seizure shortly after leaving the stage and was whisked out of the venue. She has always been my favorite actress and seeing her at the Oscars was very disturbing, you knew things were very bad.

Your comments regarding those gay authors does not surprise me. Some of them tend to be a jealous, viscous lot.

Susan Hayward's performance in "I Want to Live" is one of the best ever. She had previously been nominated numerous times and had never won. The word in Hollywood was "Susie has finally gotten her Oscar".

RIP Miss Hayward, actresses of you caliber no longer exist.

I know I’m old when the hard rock rebel music I listened to as a teen is now played in elevators at the bank.
