I loved her in Back Street. I thought Susan Hayward and John Gavin were perfect.

She was in the Hughes film The Conqueror, starring John Wayne...and shot 130 miles from the atomic test site in Nevada. They're still arguing whether the many cases of cancer in cast and crew were caused by radioactive contamination. Hayward was the object of the immortal Wayne line: I feel this Tartar woman is for me, and my blood says, take her. There are moments for wisdom and moments when I listen to my blood; my blood says, take this Tartar woman. Delivered as only The Duke could...

She made a really bad last appearance at the academy awards about a year before her death, I think he presented with Charlton Heston. She looked horrible and had a pretty crummy wig on, walked out on stage in a hobbled fashion. She had battled round one of a two-round battle with brain cancer at that point.

When I was in college a few years later I recall picking up a biography of her that had just been published. I was just skimming through it at the University Bookstore, and noted at the end a recounting of her last days and the experience of the folks who went to see her one last time. The description of her was very disturbing and the apparent facts disclosed were upsetting. I put the book back on the shelf and wondered why any biographers would have included this. Then a few months later the two authors were on some talk show (this would have been Merv Griffin's wheelhouse) and the minute they came out and spoke you realized that these were these flaming queer adulators of glamourous stars. And while they professed to be such fans of hers they capped their book with a rather nasty recounting of her condition at the end. Totally unnecessary. But, as they were gay, maybe they resented her and included that section to cut her down a notch.

My father was very clever. He was always buying me coloring books and paper dolls of all the pin up girls. Wonder if mom ever caught on.

Woah! I made a mistake memory wise. Actor Barry Nelson was the first to play James Bond on TV. As for John Gavin, here’s this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gavin

James Bond

Gavin was signed for the role of James Bond in the film Diamonds Are Forever (1971) after George Lazenby left the role.[25] However, David Picker, head of United Artists, wanted the box-office assurance of Sean Connery. Gavin’s contract was honored despite losing the role to Connery. According to Roger Moore’s James Bond Diary, Gavin was slated to play Bond in Live and Let Die (1973), but Harry Saltzman insisted on a British actor for the role and Moore was given the part.[26]

Thanks again for the Wikipedia link. I do remember now that story about him missing out of the James Bond films. I had also forgotten about the movie A Time to Live and a Time to Die. Loved that one too.

You know you’re getting old when you hear “48 years ago” and your mind starts thinking the 1940s or 1950s when, in reality, that was 1975.

She was John Wayne's sweetheart in Reap the Wild Wind where neither were the leads. That movie and I'd Climb the Highest Mountain in which she played a rural minister's wife are my favorites of her films, as they are both quite different from her other movies.

Inknow. 40 years ago was the 80s, seems like it could have been “Suddenly Last Summer.”
