Do You Get Those Kaleidoscopic auras in your eye?
Free Republic Vanity ^ | 7-6-2021 | Loud Mime

Something happened recently that I believe may help some people.

I have had many of these ocular migraines over the last two years. I kept a diary on their occurrences on my iPhone, because I wanted to have a trend line.

Suddenly they stopped. Not one in the last eight months. The scare of actual migraine headaches (curse them!) has gone to near zero. I looked back at my medical records to see what happened.

Please pass this information along to any person with this problem.

The only thing that changed: I had a bad tooth extracted. It was on the left side; my auras started on the left and then traveled to the right.

Draw your own conclusion, but to end that long string of kaleidoscopes definitely revealed a possibility.

Please send this along to anybody with a similar problem.

I started getting really bad migraines in my early teens, just about the time I started having a beer on a regular basis, now and then.

There are two approaches. Drink more. Or drink less.

I chose more.

They went away.

I grew up with a really bad condition known as ‘Cluster Headache’. Doctors and neurologists call it the grand daddy of all headaches, even way worse than migraines. It was extremely difficult to carry on a productive life when my clusters set in. The only thing that ever made them subside is growing older, after 50 they started to be less and less of a problem, now into my early 60s they hardly ever show up and they're much less severe when they do. The literature on Clusters says this is normal, as you get older cluster headache can subside and even disappear altogether.

Anyway, my point being headaches can subside on their own. It happened to me.

When I had these things, they were much brighter and larger. Started on the right side and moved slowly towards the left until they sort of disappeared off the stage. I think it was about 20 mins during which I was essentially blind because pulsating bright lights covering half your field of vision sort of makes it hard to read or drive or do anything except wait it out.

the first time it happened I was in my 20s and sitting in a business meeting in Spain. I just sat their silently blinded as the meeting proceeded, confused and concerned. By the time for the bio break it had passed and I mentioned to my boss in passing that I'd gone blind for most of the meeting so far. He was horrified and told me to go get it checked. But I was a young single man in my 20s, I didn't go to doctors so nah, I just figured I'd wait and see what happened. Amazing I survived my 20s, I think i f I accidentally drank a glass of bleach I'd have said 'Should I call an ambulance?? Nah, let's wait it out and see if it gets better"

Plus, if anyone reading this has or has recently had these symptoms, please check your blood pressure! You can get a good quality cuff at Walgreens for about $45 so that you can track daily for a month or so. I don’t want any Freeper bro or sister going through the same thing that I did, this time last year. Silent killer!

Interesting that you should mention that, my cat is lying next to my computer chair as if she is dead, but she's not since her tail is still twitching.

Glad that you should even bring that up, definitely weird stuff happening these days......

Apparently an opthalmic migraine is just an occular migraine without any pain. According to a eye care website:

"Some people get the visual symptoms without the headache. This is called Ophthalmic Migraine. The cause is due to a temporary spasm in the blood vessels behind the eye called “vasospasm” similar to a spasm or cramp that you may have once experienced in one of your leg muscles (Charlie-Horse). Usually, this resolves without treatment and many people never have another episode. Some people may continue to have them. An examination of the eye is important to rule out any other causes for these symptoms."

I found that if I took some ibuprofen they went away within 10 to 15 minutes.

They happen at no particular time, rhyme or reason

My eye doctor is not worried......I just relax and know it will soon go away

I took clonidine (a blood pressure medicine) first prescribed on a trip to eastern Europe. Since then (2013) I have only had one migraine. Used to have several a month.

I had them without migraines on and off for decades.

Had a decompression incident after diving and was diagnosed with PFO (patent foleum something) that allows venous blood to transfer over to the arterial side. Hole between chambers. Allows nitrogen bubbles from diving and blood clots to pass over and do bad things.

Anyway, seems that getting that fixed is/was indicated for migrain. Have had very infrequent auras since getting plugged, so maybe mine have nothing to do with what caused a migrain. Strokes are often linked to PFO as well.

I’ve had ocular migraines infrequently for about 35 years. They seem to be associated with sinus inflammation. I don’t get colorful aura, rather I get black or distorted areas moving through my field of vision. It will run it’s course in an hour or two. Taking antiinflammatories help shorten it down to 20-30 minutes. Then I’m left with a dull ache for a while.

I get occular migraines from time to time. I have seen no pattern for the occurrences. I might go several months or several years without getting one. I know of no particular event that stops them. They can just go away for long periods of time.

My doctor said there were medications available but I have never felt like I needed to take anything for the infrequent events that last only last 20 minutes or so.

Bright lights trigger mine. Last one I felt like I was hallucinating. Always twenty minutes or less, no pain.

Those things are probably scintillating scotomas and are related to epilepsy and/or migraines. "Migraine without headache" although I definitely get a less than pleasant sensation when I get them.

Another possibility is allergies. My doctor told me they can be triggered by seasonal allergies. LOL I have had plenty of trouble with my allergies the past few years, but I’ve had only one ocular migraine for a few years. Thank goodness.

I used to get ocular migraines as well, for about 6 years. I cannot think of the last time I had one, nor can I think of anything that changed for me other than changing the popcorn ceiling in the guest bedroom. I sincerely doubt that ceiling texture in a room I seldom visit has any effect on me...

Those ARE tame. Mine are flashing bars of colored lights, shaped in a curved zig-zag pattern that enlarges as it slides off to the side and disappears over the course of about 25 mins. I’ve had them in both eyes, and several times had a new one begin before the first was over. It makes driving a nightmare; the only thing to do is find someplace to pull over until it’s gone.
The first one sent me to the hospital fearing a stroke. The doctor told me to take up to four ibuprofen (fewer if I couldn’t keep them down). It helps prevent pain.

“Strokes are often linked to PFO as well.”

I’m not sure what a PFO is, but I suffered a mild stroke while on bypass during heart surgery about 10 years ago. (Something that happens frequently, I’m told.)

Before I even left the hospital, the “ocular migraines” began, and I have been experiencing anywhere from 5 to 15 of them per month ever since.

There is no pain involved, and the symptoms resolve within 15 to 20 minutes.

An extensive Internet search found the best description of my symptoms to be something called “scintillating scotoma.”
