Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.
More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.
My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.
There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.
I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.
The original recipe I considered had too much alcohol which I am very sensitive to, plus I make the juice with dried berries one pound at a time and it makes more juice than 7 cups.
Also there are other places to find benefits of elderberry, the one I linked is not the be-all and end-all.
bkmk for later
What are your thoughts on salt inhalation?
I’ve never really looked into it. I do neti with salt water regularly, and recommend, and same with steam inhalations - simple bowl w/boiling water and usually EOs like eucalyptus or breathing blends (I make a good one). You could tell me about them - breathing in steam from salty water?
No. It's dry - no moisture. Basically you're breathing in micro-crystals and negative ions. Apparently the air dragging over the salt crystals makes tiny crystals release. There is some real science on the efficacy as well, but not much. Mostly anecdotal evidence. Obviously this is with high quality Himalayan salt. The science says it can decrease mucus viscosity some. That's all kids of beneficial for a number of ailments. And we of course know salt wreaks havoc on microbial varmints.
I think you would find the stories of the healing salt caves quite interesting. There are even resorts set up in old salt mines:
This one looks swank.

Very interesting. I will ask DH about Poland - has salt mines, and he knew people who worked in mines, heard stories. He lived in a town that has a famous salt mine.
Dasting. Let me know of any cool info please.
I used to to salt rubs. Good for skin, detoxing. Get in shower with small bowl of salt. Get wet, turn water off. Rub salt all over body obviously avoiding mucus membranes. Rinse off.
Haven’t had chance to ask him yet.
Bing.
I asked him. He doesn’t know what actual kinds of treatments were done in the salt mines. His mother worked at some place (don’t know what kind) where the employees had a sort of vacation thing, many factory workers had the same. Part of the benefits was a ticket to go to treatments in the salt mine which was nearby. Sort of a rest/recuperation vacation. Some workers took advantage of it, some just sat around and drank and played cards. His mother went to the treatments but she’s gone now and he can’t ask her for details.
Thanks LJ.

Greetings, Bob! Hope things going well.
:^) Thanks, lj. Every day is a challenge, but all is well. I hope the same with you.
I kept meaning to get to this thread, finally did. I saw requests to be added to to your ping list. Add my name also, please.
I will add you! And I have a pile of notes next to me to type up and add. Herbs and other stuff. Soon!
Looked a bit, did not find it. Did you post it? ...or PM me if it is a product that you offer. I have mixed success with my present sleep aids... try not to take the same thing every night. Some are not 'natural'. {¦^/
I see that you have had a few replies. One of my regular sources:
Beta-Sitosterol, common in plants - e.g. found in vegetable oil, nuts, avocados - being a steroid, β-sitosterol is a precursor of anabolic steroid boldenone, often abused in sports.
My point is that steroid use must be watched carefully especially by those with blood sugar problems.
Concerning shingles - which I have never had and will not ever have {natural immunity - reason following} - I had an argument for maybe 15 years with the medical people that shingles occurs in people who had chicken pox as children. The infecting virus is herpes zoster. People would come to me in desperation to ask if there was any cure for shingles; I would tell them to ask their doctor for a chicken pox vaccination - but DON'T tell the Dr that it is because of shingles! ...never worked, of course.
I argued incessantly with medicos to give a chicken pox vaccination to their aging patients. The doctors would argue that, if they had chicken pox as children, they were immune to the virus. Since both maladies are caused by the same virus such a statement is demonstrably impossible! ...but they naturally wanted to hear it from the AMA or Mayo Clinic or Lancet.
Now I see that Wikipedia agrees with everything that I argued way back when.
The point is that obviously the virus lies dormant in the sheath of the nerve fibers - myelin sheath. For whatever reason, it is activated with age and causes great pain. A good FReeper friend just last year had Shingles on the face and in the eyes - a horror that almost caused her her sight. I am immune because I was repeatedly exposed to chicken pox as a child without ever contracting the disease and thus must be naturally immune.
To cut this short, a Japanese doctor got the same revelation that I had in the 90's and experimented with vaccination. It worked! Now, since shingles vaccination is separate from chicken pox vaccination naturally the price can be raised.
Still, finally there is a vaccination and countless people that had chicken pox as children can escape the horror of shingles as adults. AND - I was correct all along! :^D
