Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

Aha, tincture. Easiest way to get it into the otherwise unwilling. One way to reduce the alcohol if needed, is put in a cup, pour a bit of boiling water on it, stir, and let sit for a while.

I was already interested in herbs and natural healing when I was 20, and a couple of years later I shared an apartment with a young mother whose tiny baby had horrible colic. The poor baby cried and screamed all day and night, and poor mother got no sleep and didn’t know what to do. Doc said baby would “grow out of it”. So I went to library or read one of my few books, and catnip was mentioned as a remedy for colic. I bought some dried catnip, made tea, and mother gave baby 1 small teaspoon. Within half an hour or less, no more crying. It was like a miracle.

So, she gave baby catnip, and everyone was happy.

I grew a lot of catnip this summer and made about 3 quarts of catnip tincture, I actually did triple strength as I had so much herb. I am using for stomach aches, intestinal discomfort, gas, and mostly for sleeping. Helps tremendously, calming not dulling. Also considered useful for colds and flu. Good to have with children in the home, hardly any taste, even with triple strength. I never want to be without it now.

I hope today to have time to put together herbs that assist blood circulation, and for joint/bone health. Would like a link to a Body Talk search for practitioners? I actually sent link to someone yesterday so I can grab it easily.

Wow. I never knew catnip was good for humans. The cats seem to get high from it and love chewing things with it.

I should get some high quality herb and try it. Thanks.

I have an old friend who loves catnip and always grows it, she dries and makes the tea. I was visiting her once and had the tea and I hate it the taste, so when I grew it I decided to tincture it instead. Lately her cats roll in it and destroyed it so I’m sending her seeds to grow in planters. It is considered a sedative so cats seems to like it. It is calming but not dulling (to humans anyway). I use it almost daily.

Any tips for Covid?

One of the things that came up was homeopathic (highly diluted) oleander. There was a rumor that Ben Carson used it during his illness, and Mike Linden from MyPillow has also touted it. Apparently it's good for lots of different viruses. I bought some and will try it the next time I have a cold or flu. If it's COVID I think I'll go for the Trump Cocktail (but maybe I'll throw in some oleander, too).

On my To Do list is to post herbs good for:

Lymph cleansing

Blood circulation and cleansing

Cancer prevention/treatment

Home made all kinds of stuff like mouthwash, deoderant, salves, skin oil, facial pore cleanser, and whatever else I know or make. I may have posted some of these, I’ll have to look.

I mentioned on the Q thread that I'm up in Canada (Hi, LovelyLinda!). My goal is to somehow bring my 88-year-old mother back to Arizona, despite, you know, the thing. Since my Dad died in June, my mother has been without visitors, and with her stroke it's very dicey for her to communicate on the phone. I have applied for her immigration, but that takes nearly a year, so I'm going to bring her back under some "essential" category. The one that seems to fit best is "medical treatment". I plan to set her up with some hyperbaric oxygen treatments in Tucson.

I have 9 more days in a hotel room before I get to see her. The Canadian 14-day mandatory self-isolation programs comes with fines up to $750K and/or up to 6 months in prison.

Before we leave, I'm going to get her going on an essential oils regimen called the Emotional Reset. This collection of oil blends was assembled by Jack Canfield (the world's #1 success coach) and Kathryn Trestain (a former White House correspondent who was debilitated by PTSD after her WWII war hero father was killed by the VA medical system and her mother died during the subsequent court proceedings). Kathryn attributes her recovery from PTSD to essential oils.

The last time I was here I tried the oils on my mother once. She was coming out of her grief over my father's death, but was still highly limited in her communication ability. She seemed to understand things, but she could only grunt (or occasionally scream) in response. The stroke undoubtedly had a role in this, but she seemed to have other problems. Mainly, I think, she was deeply unhappy to be living with physical and mental diabilities in a large, institutional-style care home after having the run of 36 acres on the beautiful banks of the Peace River in northern British Columbia for 35 years. On one of the few evenings before I had to get back home, I applied the oil blends, one after another.

By the time I had completed the EO sequence, she was laughing at my jokes, speaking in complete sentences, and happily reminiscing about her 65 years of marriage with my father. It was a remarkable transformation. You can never tell in these situations whether it was the oils or something else, but I'm willing to bet it was the oils. I plan to repeat the process for several days in a row before we head back across the border, and continue it for a while afterwards.

Back in Arizona we have a much nicer place waiting for her. Instead of a multi-story apartment-style building with 100+ residents, it's a former family home, refitted to be a care home for 10 seniors. Instead of institutional green walls, it has murals, and goats and chickens in the back, and garden boxes in the front, and a large atrium with colorful birds. I'm hoping she'll actually be happy there.

That's the first I've heard of BodyTalk. Thanks, lj, for bringing it into the conversation. Offhand, it reminds me of the Alexander Technique, a method of using your body as it was originally designed to move, rather than using it according to the patterns and habits you have picked up over your lifetime.

As I read a little about BodyTalk, i see that it shares with the Alexander Technique concerns for mind-body integration. The difference I see is one of emphasis. The Alexander Technique primarily uses mind-body integration to heal the body. BodyTalk primarily uses mind-body integration to heal the mind.

I'm interested to debug this initial impression, and to learn more about BodyTalk.

re your post about itchy skin and EOs.
**
I had a horrible itching, red patch on the calf of my leg. Tried everything OTC. Dermatologist visit = a $300 rx, which I could not afford, so he gave me a compound pharmacy rx for $30 which made it worse. I went back and he gave me another rx = $700 (yes, I’m serious). I refused it when I went to pick it up. Prayed...I was in misery. Couldn’t sleep at night for the pain, burning and itching. My daughter was just learning about EOs. She told me to use oregano mixed with coconut oil topically, and oregano in a capsule. It began to improve after just two days. In a week, it was gone. Haleluyah for HIS natural means of healing us. I now look to oils and herbs first for any malady.

My husband has COPD - was on Symacort, plus inhalers 5-6 times a day. The rx was affecting his blood count indicating cancer. Family doc sent him to a cancer doc who said it was from the Symbacort and to stop using it. We looked at each other and said, “How’s he going to be able to breathe?” We prayed. By now, I was using EOs. He started using doTerra’s Breathe. He does so well on this - rarely has to use it (such as if he’s somewhere with chemical odors, or if there’s wood smoke.) It’s a miracle! Haleluyah again for God’s healing plants.

I love reading these posts y’all. Keep them coming and let’s get healthy!

Keeping you and your Mom in prayer that you’ll be able to get her to the states so that she can thrive instead of being institutionalized.

Great info! Thank you. Prayers for a successful relocation of your mother.

A friend puts 2 drops each of Wild Orange and Balance in the palm of her hands, rubs together and breathes. She then rubs her neck and throat to continue breathing the mixture. She said it is very calming.

Lots of good information on this thread. Thank you, LJ, for starting it.

Hey there AZ. Good to have you back for a visit. The penalties for breach of the self-isolation are indeed severe here, though I haven’t heard of a fine greater than $2500 yet, not that I’d necessarily know. I’d expect nothing less from that nazi Trudeau. I hope your plan to get your mom to Arizona works. Good luck and safe travels for both of you.

Thanks for the tip about oregano oil with a coconut oil carrier for itchy skin. I haven’t tried that yet (although I did use pure oregano oil to remove a couple of skin tags). So far, what’s worked for me best is thyme oil in a jojoba carrier.

I left my oregano oil at home. I’ll try it when I get back in a couple of weeks or so.
