It's been a while since I had babies to deal with. However, I was in the super-market today checking out when I saw a locked case of baby formula in the front of the store.
Baby formula. Locked up. Why?
I was thinking maybe somebody out there knows why that is so.
“Minimum $50 to enter the store. EBT cards accepted. No more shoplifting.”
Perhaps your business model should be the approach tried in all these “food deserts” in the ‘hood we keep hearing the permanent griper class carry on about. There’s a location in North Tulsa that can’t keep a grocery store because the shrinkage costs are too high.
Olive oil = made from olives
Apple juice = made from apples
Baby powder = ?

February 12, 2015
An investigation into a sophisticated baby-formula theft ring in the Phoenix area has resulted in the arrests of 17 Arizonans.

I was stopped once at the grocery store when the door beeper beeped. They rushed at me and ran the scanner all around the cart and me but nothing beeped. The witch made me dump my purse embarrassing me in front of everyone. Small town so everyone saw. Of course, nothing was found. LEO hubby left work and had a meeting of the minds with the manager telling him if they were going to accuse customers of theft and had scanners run over them and their purses dumped, they better call the police or else. They immediately disconnected the beeper but never did apologize.
Cigarettes.
not for crack moms heroine or pick your favorite inner city drug. Formula is a great way to convert food stamps into cash for drugs.
Sometimes I happen into walmart at 1-2 AM (24 hour walmart) and then sometimes I get to witness this scene of a bunch of Amish men hanging out jamming to the radio and inside 1 or 2 amish women buying multi orders of baby formulas. Sure the men outside are waiting for the proceeds.
I don’t know why those transactions in the store take long and require additional paperwork.
My son when he was very young worked as a bagger, backup cashier and cart pusher. He said grocery stores have a special name for these type of shoppers. It’s derogatory but meaningless if you didn’t know.
Your experience is exactly why I joined Dollar Shave Club and also havent looked back.
Even if they werent locked up I was still thinking of it before that.
$20 for 4 replacement razors? When I can get 5 for $9 online? No thanks.
And to answer your question directly its as others have already said: rampant shoplifting of these overpriced items. Thats why things like razor blades and sonic toothbrush heads are getting locked up.
Now the baby formula I dont get that one. Really. I mean why are people shoplifting that stuff when one can just get an EBT card to get them for free? I mean talk about the height of laziness cant even be bothered with the paperwork to get an EBT card, would rather steal the product instead.
Or is there such a black market for baby formula that one can get it for oneself with an EBT and still make enough risking a shoplifting charge? If so, it is definitely overpriced itself. Just use what God provides for baby if its come to that level of expense. Sheesh.
How bizarre is that!? Only WIC items are commonly stolen?
Why!? Its like the exact opposite of what one would expect. One would expect to see *non* WIC/EBT stuff getting stolen. Why are people stealing stuff they can get for free with their EBT card?!
Because the “homeless” steal everything.
Because even with public assistance, people who receive benefits do not feel the need to spend the money on certain things. Especially if it isn’t for “them”. So they steal them. Many didn’t want the baby, anyway, so any expense spent on that walking talking pooping inconvenience is looked at resentfully. Except when it comes to fancy clothes and sneakers for the baby, then all EBTs are off...
Razors are expensive, but needed, so they are stolen. Diapers, too, but it is harder to walk out of a store with them.
I bought a specialty battery for a digital camera via E-Bay several years ago when I lived in HK. The camera shop was in South Carolina and the guy mailed it to me at my work address. I put the battery in my backpack and went home. The guy had not disabled his anti-theft device before mailing and I set off a theft alarm at a grocery store I stopped at on the way home which evidently used the same system type system. It took me two hours to get out there despite the fact that the store did not sell that battery (Nobody in HK did) and that was the only thing in the bag setting off an alarm and I had the receipt that had come in the package.
:)
I still dont get the scam. How can anyone convert enough baby formula (or anything) into enough cash to make it worthwhile?
Where are they selling all this stuff? I guess thats my question.
Do you live in a town with lots of Democrat voters?
Not if youre smoking crack.
Baby formula is very expensive. They do this in our store too. It’s a top shoplifted item.
Major black market for baby formula.
Major black market for baby formula.
Even though WIC is not means-tested meaning billionaires can get free formula, milk, eggs, etc. baby formula is a high theft item. Cans will have sensor tags in some stores.
