And you could not go and turn off the data collection options (you could have done that during the initial install), but instead post an absurd rant essentially saying you have no idea what you are doing?

I swear is FR the place for all of the tech illiterate people on the right choose to go?

I cannot believe that Mucrosoft would shoot itself in the foot this way, when it needed to build goodwill with its customer base the most right now.

They should have made a point of saying that Microsoft would protect its customers for privacy issue and then follow through. It might have helped it increase its phone share as well if it had done that.

Thanks for the heads up, I was thinking about upgrading my back up computer. Wow...just what we need....., an OS with the snooping ability of Google.

You can turn off all those “spyware” settings. But I get the feeling that won’t make you happy.

But why would anyone want that feature that collects data? Shouldn't it be the other way round like if you do want that feature you'd have to turn it on. BTW, I am not having W10 installed.

I'm in need of a new computer and I don't want the mess my wife deals with every day trying to work with Windows 8. I've heard there's a company near Seattle doing quite a business in reconditioned laptops that come with Windows 7 - XP Office. (Of course as the the demand for 7 keeps growing, Microsoft will probably write updates rendering it inoperative.)

If I can't find them, I think it's time to go to Mac.

Why would we join you? Installed W10 on a W7 and W8 laptops, working great. Opted out of data sharing, good to go.

I am waiting for the R1 update. By then, we should pretty well know whether W10 is junk or the new messiah.

I have read about the privacy issues. Unless one specifically says ‘no’ on about a dozen pages of user-agreements, they are sending every keystroke to MS.

I know they have removed or hidden some of their programs. IE11 is hidden. Media Center is gone. I have some hardware and software that depend on those. Will the software/hardware work? Or is this ‘free’ upgrade going to cost me $$$$ for new software and hardware.

By the time R1 is out, I will decide then whether to go Win10 or stay with Win7. Win7 cost me a laser printer — no drivers for it — and several software programs that do not have modern equivalents.

You can roll back from Win10 to Win7/8 within 30 days of the upgrade.

30 DAYS AFTER THE UPGRADE YOU CAN ROLL BACK.

Basically go to
1. Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Recovery.
2. Select "Go back to Windows 8.1", then "Get Started
3. You will be asked a couple of questions about rolling back, then it the restore begins.

The restore was fairly quick AND restored all data.

Tom's has a good write up w/ screenshots here: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2738057/uninstall-windows.html

New software with potentially undesirable or intrusive features should come with them switched off and give the customer the options to enable them later if they want.

I’m so glad I have waited to upgrade. I may wait indefinitely.

I remember Windows 3.0. Free to everyone. Microsoft mailed copies to very business in the USA. It has been nothing but paid upgrades ever since.

I expect a smart techie can/will write an app consolidating all this issues so us not so smart users could have one place to go to check off the features we don't want and change them all at once.

Thank you in advance.
