I am white. I was born and raised in South Carolina, a state to which my grandmother’s family came in the 1600s. They owned slaves. Part of her family were Pinckneys, which means that someone in my family may have owned someone in the family of the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was killed in the terrorist attack on Charleston’s Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday night. Those same people who owned his ancestors were likely involved in, or at least aware of, the suppression first of the Stono rebellion in 1739 — which resulted in mass executions and the placement of the severed heads of rebels on stakes on the road outside of Charleston and in the Negro Acts, a tightening of slave laws, including the outlawing of drums. And they were probably also involved later, in 1822, in suppressing the Denmark Vesey rebellion, which was centered around Emanuel. When that revolt failed, the church was burned and Vesey was executed — probably to the relief of my land-holding ancestors.
There were also four white people arrested and executed for their role in Vesey’s plot. I can’t help but think that, had there been more of them, the tragic course of South Carolina’s history may have been different, and perhaps we would not have bred terrorists such as Dylann Roof, the alleged shooter.

When hundreds of thugs rioted and looted in Ferguson, and in Baltimore, and in Los Angeles, and in so many other cities, millions cheered their thuggishness. Is there even one person cheering the thuggish Charleston murderer in public? Are there more than a few isolated nutcases cheering him in private? The big difference between black crime and white crime isn’t that the whites get away with it; it’s that the guilty whites are shunned and condemned.

My g-g-g-grandfather owned 100 slaves in a plantation in the high country of SC before the Civil War, with a reputation for treating his slaves badly (as if one could treat them any other way, but he must have been a real sunab*tch.) I am not proud of him, and he deserved to lose everything in the war, as he did. But I am not him, his sins are not my sins, and in any case two g-g-grandfathers from two sides of the family fought against his side in the war. Blaming me or my skin color for Dylann Roof does not make one black life any better, and if black lives matter, the way to get them to matter more is not to place a burden on people who do not deserve it, but to find the bastards, black and white and brown and red and yellow, get them off the streets, remove them from society, and then teach ethics to everyone—not WHITE ethics, not BLACK ethics, RIGHT AND WRONG ethics. May God grant it happen soon.

I live in NYC. You dont hear that much.
