Bill O'Reilly: The Gospels are wrong but MY word is inspired by the Holy Spirit
La Salette Journey ^ | September 27, 2013 | Paul Melanson

Posted on 09/27/2013 7:29:46 AM PDT by cleghornboy

Bill O'Reilly, in an interview with CBS, claims that the Holy Spirit inspired his book entitled 'Killing Jesus" even as he attempts to "correct the Gospels. When confronted with such an arrogant approach to God's Word, they responded in no uncertain terms:

"They have not feared to lay hands upon the sacred Scriptures, saying that they have corrected them. Nor is it likely that they themselves are ignorant of how very bold their offense is. For either they do not believe that the sacred Scriptures were spoken by the Holy Spirit, in which case they are unbelievers, or if they regard themselves as being wiser than the Holy Spirit, what else can they be but demoniacs." (St. Hippolytus of Rome, "Fragment" in Eusebius, History of the Church, 5, ch. 28)

In his book, Bill advances the idea that Jesus could not have spoken the words, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do" because the way he was hung on the cross would not have allowed enough air in His lungs to speak them audibly." Bill also refers to Jesus as "the guy" in his interview with CBS.

The problem with Bill's argument should be immediately obvious to even the most unastute who spend even a modicum of time with Sacred Scripture. In Matthew 27: 46-48, we read: "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' And some of the bystanders hearing it said, 'This man is calling Elijah.' And one of them [because Jesus said "I thirst," Jn 19:28] at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink."

Your are correct of course as He sits at the right hand of the father. I was referring to the story of His earthly ministry.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. --Galatians 6:7-8

For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools. --Romans 1:21-22

I couldn't find any sources for this other than the La Salette Journey website...

And evidently the original poster is either the article's author Paul Melanson or is associated with him. It might be unfair for me to say this, but the whole thing seems just a little suspicious.

I share your suspicions. But see the link in post 18.

That CBS story just got FReeped. And there are actual quotes by BOR.

So when God told him to write a book - that contradicts the Gospels - then who are we to disbelieve, right?

The “author” is a single source poster who rarely responds to comments:

In other words, a common blogpimp.

The full story is from CBS News and is posted here:

I knew this buffoon had a super-sized ego, but that is ridiculous.

...my own opinion of O’Reilly is far more beneficent than what I’ve seen on this particular thread, but that said, there is on thing that irked me in his interview with O’Donnel...he asserts, definitively, that the Johannine Gospel (as well as the three Epistles) was written by the Apostle John, while exiled on the island of Patmos...I think he is conflating these works with the Revelation, as I don’t recall exile on Patmos being identified in the Gospel...(though, as always, I could be wrong...)

...belief in the attributed authorship of Holy Writ is a matter of faith, something nobody can state with unerring certitude, and O’Reilly would do well to remember that in this situation...

“...the words of the prophesy of this book..”

This is from Revelation 22 and is self-referencing. “This book” is the book of Revelation. This is the scope of the curse which addresses adding to or taking away from the words of the book, and then promoting the altered version as the true version. Such a person can never be saved. This is an unpardonable sin, as is blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

People disagree with scripture all the time, but that is not changing the words. That is ignoring them, not understanding them. BO’R doesn’t want to attribute the bible’s faithfully recorded sayings to Jesus. I didn’t either before I believed they were true and faithful which occurs when someone believes in the Faithful and True. (Revelation 19:11).

But I will add that one who is so fueled to actually write a book disputing the truth of scripture is more than an agnostic.

This is stunning-—even for O’Reilly, who is a moron.

I haven’t watched him in ages, but the other night I was flipping channels, and I came across him boasting about some interview he did about this book. He showed a clip in which he said, “Jesus was just some regular guy who really didn’t want to get up on that cross.”

“In his book, Bill advances the idea that Jesus could not have spoken the words, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do” because the way he was hung on the cross would not have allowed enough air in His lungs to speak them audibly”

Did he also advance the idea that he could not have risen from the dead because he had no pulse?

O’Reilly and Dugard did a LOT of research. He doesn’t claim to be writing a theological work, but an “historical” one.
