Can we please keep comments about the Mormon faith off the political discussion threads?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 05/24/2011 4:07:08 PM PDT by ken5050

As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others here feel the same way.

No it’s boring. It’s all copy and paste. I have no problem with people asking if Romney is a moron for believing that stuff but people go way overboard with the copy/paste business.Express your opinion but don’t write a freaking essay every time.

I couldn't agree more. It's not only unproductive, it's unAmerican! U.S. Constitution, Article VI, paragraph 3: ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

You're a cafeteria Constitutionalist. You refuse to acknowledge Section 2, Article 1, Clause 5.

And I haven’t donated the last several FReepathons exclusively due to this. It appears, I am not the only one.

no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Your definition of this clause is incorrect. A religious qualification of the candidate cannot keep him off the ballot, but it would be unconstitutional for anyone to try and instruct a voter that said voter cannot consider a candidate's lack of discernment about a cult when pulling that lever in the voting booth.

This is just another of a mormonism "lyin' for the Lord" dodge by those who want to censor free speech.

I'm old enough to remember when John Kennedy ran. You haven't seen a thing compared to what was floating around back then, half of it in newspapers around the country. You almost couldn't stop for a red light without someone putting a "Kennedy the Evil Papist" or "Kennedy the Antichrist" flyer under your wiper and that was in a town where the population was well over half Catholics. If you can't stand the heat then get out of the temple.

Mitt gets to either show how stupid all the crap is or he gets to show he can't make it look stupid, that's the way it goes. Well, if he were muslim and black, in which case the race thing trumps the religion thing, then no one could say much. Look at the bright side, though, he's going to have a lot of people looking at his being Mormon rather than at how friggin stupid he is.

Agreed.

Every Mormon I’ve ever met has been a kind, responsible person. The negativity people express is counterproductive and the opposite of Christianity.

I just refrain from responding to the posts from people I now recognize to be negative browbeaters.

Is there anything in the Constitution that states that atheists, muslims or scientologists cannot run for the presidency?

I know that the Dutch and British constitution prohibit a Catholic from becoming a ruling monarch.

Ken, I have been saying that since long before Free-republic came out of the closet as a site that institutionally dislikes Mormonism.

In the last election, I wanted to address serious concerns about Mitt Romney's so called conservative credentials. I could never get to the discussion because, as a Mormon myself I was always attacked and it was assumed that I was a Romney supporter (when in fact I liked Fred Thompson)

Your position here is a logical one, however, it is one that will not be supported, nor if history here is an indication will it be treated logically and fairly.

I hope you have some asbestos underwear handy...

If so then it’s 100% legitimate to discuss it. Maybe if he gets elected he will try to impose some of his views on all of us

This is where your paranoia and fear of Mormons leads you to psycho babble and makes finding conservative allies more difficult. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney did not expend any effort in drawing people into Mormonism. His political style of situational politics led him to promote Romneycare which is a political error with which we should rationally fear.

The original poster is right. Keep your politics and religion separate.

If a presidential candidate is working on being a god on another planet what makes me think he isn’t trying to do that here first? Do I really want a god for a president?

“I believe that LDS is considered by management as an anti-Christian religion, making it fair game on all threads.”

The management of this forum has every right to think whatever they want, however, ceasing to treat all religions fairly is a detriment to the forum, and IMHO will continue to damage this forums as a conservative bastion.

Jews are not “Christian”, would a Jewish president be bad? (Compare to our current Muslim taught one and answer...)

JFTR, the full name of the Church is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints”.

We consider ourselves Christian and Jesus Considers us Christan.

How do I know? Jesus told me so in answer to prayer to him.

Mormonism is considered by all main stream Christian belief systems to not be a part of Christianity.

Mormons consider Jesus to be the Savior and the Son of God. That is not Christian?

I grew up in a large city where the population was predominantly Catholic, but lived in a Jewish-Catholic neighborhood. We were Lutherans who had to go to the ‘burbs to find a church.

Many years after I left the city, I realized that my Jewish and Catholic friends chose which tenets of belief to accept and reject, while feeling true to their faith. Since then, it makes no sense to me to develop an opinion on someone based on their religious affiliation.

I personally believe discussion of a politician’s faith should be restricted to the Religion Forum, regardless of what faith they are.
