Republican candidate Robert F. McDonnell has opened a nine-point lead over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in the race for governor in Virginia. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Virginia voters finds McDonnell leading Deeds 47% to 38%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and 12% are undecided.

"You've got to remember I grew up on a farm,'' Deeds said. "You won't find too many candidates for statewide office who have performed surgery on cows and pigs." (For the record, Deeds told reporters later that the surgeries were the kind performed on male animals. Enough said.)

Virginia Republicans completed their 2009 ticket in Richmond this afternoon, teaming gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell with Bill Bolling for lieutenant governor and Ken Cuccinelli for attorney general. Bolling, the current lieutenant governor and a Hanover County insurance executive, faced nominal opposition from Patrick Muldoon, a lawyer and farmer from Southwest Virginia who said Bolling isn't sufficiently conservative.

A Giles County man paroled from prison after serving 14 years for killing two hikers on the Appalachian Trail in 1981 now is suspected of shooting two campers just off the trail in Giles on Tuesday. Randall Lee Smith, 54, was in a Roanoke hospital yesterday after crashing a pickup truck in Giles, Sgt. Michael Conroy of the Virginia State Police said.

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed an earthquake shook parts of Northern Virginia Tuesday afternoon. A magnitude 1.8 "micro" earthquake occurred one mile WSW of Annandale, Va. at 1:30 p.m approximately 6.2 miles below ground.

(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis died at her Gloucester home this morning after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 57. Davis was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and had a re-occurrence earlier this year. Davis had been receiving breast cancer treatment at Duke University and just recently had received positive reports on her condition. However, during the last week Davis’ health took a turn for the worse. Details of the funeral services will be forthcoming.
