Virginia's cash crunch is going from bad to worse, possibly shorting the state budget another $1 billion and forcing more cuts in services and layoffs.

Ahead of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's much-anticipated revenue report to the General Assembly on Monday, lawmakers from both parties are predicting the shortfall for the current two-year, $77 billion budget could reach or surpass $1 billion.

I'm from Cal-ee-fornia. These Virginians are a bunch of pikers when it comes to budget overruns...

Most of us Virginians take pride in not being Cal-ee-fornians.

No offense intended.

Dems took over...a few years ago...and the result is: We might not even have “change” left on the table in VA.

Sounds to me like VA invested too much in Government.

I’m shocked that the media says there is a budget shortfall. After all according to the Washington Compost, budget shortfalls are Gilmore’s fault and surpluses are the work of Mark Warner.

Be glad you aren’t in California!

Yeah that is interesting. That shortfall is almost as much as Mark Warner raised taxes (1.4 billion). I wonder if the rainy day fund will have to be dipped into. lol This is good news. Thanks for the post Corin!

Well didn’t used to be when Jim Gilmore was in charge. Mark Warner changed all that with a 1.4 billion tax increase and nearly doubled state spending.

No offense taken.

None taken.
With Senators Boxer and Feinstein, and living in a Bay Area that is ringed with anti-American Socialist/Marxist 'Representatives' - I figure the 'other' 49 States (or is it 56?) can justifiably take pride in not being 'Cal-ee-fornians'...
But I still maintain that we bow to none in our State's ability to ignore budgets and fiscal responsibility...yippee...

What happened - too many people forced to quit smoking due to high cigarette taxes?

hmmm...what's the common denominator?...
What is it about Democrats that drive them to ignore budgets, and to destroy the fiscal health of their host organisms? They are quite the destructive parasites.
And yes, it is true that Ahnold is a nominal 'Republican' -- but he got effectively neutered the last election (all the Propositions he backed were stomped) and the Dems run the show in this State...
Of course, 'We the People' voted this crowd into office -- so we are now just reaping what we sowed...(at this point it makes me want to repeat that quote from that California congressman from the mid-60s who after having lost an election, gave his concession speech thusly: 'The people have spoken...the bastards...')

I don’t understand. I thought we were told the Democrats were going to save us financially.

Ever wonder why States with Democrat Governors ALWAYS have budget shortfalls, while States with Republican governors (excepting Ahhhhhnold in Cali.) is more of a 50/50 proposition? Here in Mississippi, Gov. kirk Fordice had a huge budget surplus. His successor, Ronnie Musgrove, sqauandered it. HIS successor is Haley Barbour and our budget is back to normal.

Did you ever have a time when you were financially flush so you went on a little spending spree? Remember how darn good it felt? That’s the same feeling politicians get spending the peoples’ money.

The difference between conservative politicians (not always the same as Republican) and liberals ones is responsibility. Conservatives can reign in their feel-good tendencies. Liberals can’t - they are too much all about feelings instead of reasoning.

When it comes to state or federal budgets, liberals go ahead and spend whatever is “necessary” to further their feel-good programs. They know they can later use the resulting deficits as the reason to call for new taxes.

Two strategies, illustrating the difference between adults and juveniles.

Our “esteemed” elected representatives spend our money like a drunk college kid with a new credit card. When will our politicians grow up?
