Pyramid's Secret Doors to Be Opened
Discovery News ^ | March 20, 2007 | Rossella Lorenzi

Doors will soon open to reveal one of the mysteries of the Great Pyramid in Giza, Dr. Zahi Hawass, chief of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, told Discovery News in an exclusive interview... "Finally, people all over the world will know what is behind the second door in the southern shaft and the third door in the northern shaft," Hawass said... [T]hese 8-inch square shafts remained unexplored until 1993, when German engineer Rudolf Gantenbrink sent a robot through the southern shaft. Nine years later, Hawass performed an investigation of the southern shaft on live television. As the world held its breath, a tomb-raiding robot pushed a camera through a hole drilled in the copper handled door -- only to reveal another door. The following day, Hawass sent the robot through the northern shaft. After crawling for 213 feet and several sharp bends, the robot came to an abrupt halt in front of another limestone slab... "This month I am going to choose the team that is going to work with me on this project. It will be either from Singapore or Hong Kong," Hawass said. Hawass did not specify whether inspections into the shafts have already been carried or whether further robotic investigations are necessary. "I can only say that this year I will reveal the secrets of the Great Pyramid doors," Hawass told Discovery News.

That exploration led to more doors, which Hawass says he plans to open later this year. -- AP Photo/Mohammad al sehety

Uh, there's nothing to reveal. The point at which the doors terminate these shafts is very near the surface, i.e, on the back side of the last layer of blocks. This is just another Capone's Vault style hype in which Zowie will make a bunch of howlers.

after cutting through all of it, they will find an eye surrounded by rays, like the one on the back of $1 bill.

Thanks for the post.

It will be interesting, will they just find another door?

...and the criteria is a) the scientific reputation or b) the size of the wallet?

Hawass' hype is pretty over-the-top and that makes him less of a scholar and more of a PT Barnum persona. That being said, he holds some hefty credentials and he wields a lot of sway ...and he perturbs many countrymen for his associations with the west. Overall, he's probably done more good than harm. And he won't rest until he gets the Rosetta Stone back.

Like Capone's vault that you site, it'll be about the ratings ... Andy Warhol and PT Barnum were right..

This is truly vulgar.

I am astonished that an Antiquity of this world-historical value such as the Great Pyramid at Giza is actually being exposed to this form of abuse and pillage. There *ought* to be a LAW!

Who made *this* clarlatan in charge? Why does he get to call the shots, suddenly, after all these many thousands of years???

Some things on this planet are just too darn valuable to be entrusted to hype-generating vaudeville showmen: the Great Pyramid at Giza is surely one of them. Leave it alone a few more thousand years for future generations to check out: it has sat undisturbed thus long, it can wait a wee spell longer!

I am forceably reminded of that live TV "show" hosted by (was it Telly Savalas? Some bald guy anyway) about 20 years ago, opening the safe recovered by the French from the Titanic. It was a gut-wrenching vulgar sickening piece of slick opportunistic hucksterism.

How much more valuable than the Titanic is the Great Pyramid at Giza???

Archaeological rape is a good description for this. Future generations will despise our generation for allowing this to happen.

Zahi Hawass,is a shameless self-promoter. I like how he says "I will reveal".

He's always there to gloom onto the work of others and to get his mug on TV.

Whoa whoa whoa!! Before y'all go off half-cocked on how Hawass is 'destroying the credibility of Egyptology' - have you forgotten the TRULY silly stuff that the New Agers have come up with about the Pyramids and the Sphinx? My personal observation as to why Hawass is playing the 'showman' here is to make a LOUD refutation that the Pyramid was built by little green men from Mars or that there some kind of harmonic convergence meaning to the structures there. He's been fighting off the ridiculous theories of that one guy who claims theres a secret chamber under the Sphinx for years now...so I can well believe that this effort to use modern technology to explore every available crevice in the Pyramid will have important information for archaeologist, architecture and the culture of ancient Egypt. Please...cut the man some slack. I see him as fighting fire with fire and with REAL science, not the silly New Age crap that is overriding a lot of what is being said about ancient Egypt. Its truly ridiculous the stuff thats being touted out there.
