Modern men's genes suggest that something peculiar happened 5,000 to 7,000 years ago: Most of the male population across Asia, Europe and Africa seems to have died off, leaving behind just one man for every 17 women.
This so-called population "bottleneck" was first proposed in 2015, and since then, researchers have been trying to figure out what could've caused it. One hypothesis held that the drop-off in the male population occurred due to ecological or climatic factors that mainly affected male offspring, while another idea suggested that the die-off happened because some males had more power in society, and thus produced more children.
Now, a new paper, published May 25 in the journal Nature Communications, offers yet another explanation: People living in patrilineal clans (consisting of males from the same descent) might have fought with each other, wiping out entire male lineages at a time.
That ratio of 17 females for every one male "struck us as being very extreme, and there must be another explanation," said senior study author Marcus Feldman, a population geneticist at Stanford University in California. According to their new explanation, the male population didn't take a nosedive, but rather the diversity of the Y chromosome decreased due to the way people lived and fought with each other. In other words, there weren't actually fewer males, just less diversity among the males.

Gene who?...Gene Kelly? Gene Wilder?...Gene Simmons?...Hmmm, must be Gene Simmons.
I’ve never heard of biblical data making that precise a date for the flood.
There is a gap in the genealogies that is post flood. And last I heard, that gap had been narrowed to about 500 years.
5 to 7000 ya was the neolithic period notable for violent deaths and tribal warfare. I’m guessing only those families with the most male children survived to reproduce. They would all have the same Y gene.

A co-worker married an African woman and they paid a visit to his Father in Law who lived on the eastern coast - I forget the country.
He kept 3 wives in 3 different apartments. I guess this was a status symbol.
My co-worker friend related that the only thing he observed was that having 3 wives made his FIL at least 30 times as hen-pecked.

We are headed to that situation where males don’t procreate because they are queer or kicked in the gonads by butch feminists. Researchers will have an orgy analyzing that phenomenon.
They became metrosexuals and gay.
Just my thinking. Most of the 16 out of 17 males also live in their mother’s basement.
Added to that is maybe this:
War in the ancient times was an all male activity with rare exceptions. Wiping out all the males in an AO, or reducing surviving males to slave status was fairly common, iirc. And females all went to the victors.
I suspect that the world was awash in small scale wars back then. Village against village, region against region, and such like. And the wandering hunter/gatherer purist clans that refused to make the transition to settled agri life working as raiders on those settled villages.
So, imo, it was probably a whole host of stuff that added up to what we see in the gene record.

In simple words, “The winners got the women and left their DNA for the centuries to follow!”
The losers got what was leftover.
Lots of wars before agriculture.
Just smallers scale.
Lots of tribes wiped out other tribes, killed the men and kept the women and children.
I’ll go with strong men with lots of wives. They killed off the weaker men
Harems are the visible evidence of the ancient practice.
Sounds like a cool time to be alive.
