DENVER - America has lost a hero of Iwo Jima. First Lieutenant John Keith Wells, USMC, 94, of Wheat Ridge, died Thursday at the Arvada Care and Rehabilitation Center. Wells, who received the Navy Cross, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, commanded the 3rd Platoon, Easy Co., 28th Marine Regiment, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The 3rd Platoon was part of the invasion force, landing on February 19, 1945. It was a key unit in the frontal assault on Mt. Suribachi. Wells, thinking the frontal assault order from higher up was pure suicide, refused to give his marines the order...

His son, William Guarnere Jr., confirmed Sunday that his father died at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Guarnere was rushed to the hospital early Saturday and died of a ruptured aneurysm early Saturday night. "He had a good, long life," his son said. I know this is a few months old, but it's something that has been puzzling me. Where was Tom Brokaw when the "Greatest Generation" was being publicly disrespected and humiliated at the World War 2 memorial? All they wanted to do was visit this open air monument, {many in wheelchairs} that was dedicated to them. IN my mind, Brokaw should have been there, leading the charge to remove the barriers. I guess he had to make the choice, Greatest Generation or Obama. He chose Obama.

As Twitchy readers will recall, the makers of SpaghettiOs apologized last month for a crass Pearl Harbor day promotional tweet. Actress and “comedian” Natasha Leggero, a co-host of NBC’s New Year’s Eve special along with TV/radio personality Carson Daly, apparently decided to double-down on stupid with a New Year’s Eve swipe at America’s greatest generation. Because nothing says festive like mocking WWII heroes who survived the Pearl Harbor raid.

President Barack Obama's use of riot police to deal with WWII veterans wishing to visit their war memorial is the type of action one would expect of a dictator who's afraid protesters are attempting to overthrow him. Obama's obsession with keeping veterans away from their war memorial makes no sense. Why would a sane president do such a thing? Obama's actions indicate he is a compassion less vindictive individual who doesn't care about people. He wants to make himself feel important by pushing other people around. Obama blundered badly in Syria. His proposal to bomb Syria was the political equivalent...

The federal government has been blocking people from pulling off the side of the road to view Mt. Rushmore! This is government arrogance at its worst. [The original article is from a source we cannot link to here on FR (Argus Leader).] This was taken from Kristi Noem's page (R-SD).

Today, from 9am to 11am, bikers will be rallying at Washington D.C.’s WWII Memorial that has been closed to the public due to the federal government shutdown. The bikers plan to honor the WWII veterans and show their support. ... Riders!…Kick Stands Up and lets ride for these American Heroes!! America’s Greatest Generation defended our rights 70 years ago. Now it’s time that we defend THEIR rights and ensure they have access to THEIR Memorials. It’s time we show our government that we will no longer tolerate the political thugs that feel they can punish America into submission!! We are...

These are deliberate attempts to inflict pain on the public wherever they can, including shutting down our White House, Our National Parks and Mount Vernon? This is beyond silly and those GOP hacks had better find some back bone. Someone needs to hold this A-hole accountable. He needs a very public humiliation.

Governor Palin hit the current day’s shameful behavior from Barack Obama just as we’d expect her to.Via Facebook: My Call For Civil Disobedience Around The “Barrycades” It’s beyond shameful to see Barack Obama disrespect and mistreat our World War II veterans so blatantly. Obama’s political stunt to “shut down” their memorial by barricade is to elicit an angry response to generate bad publicity for people the president uses in his continual blame game. Don’t believe me? Look at the “barricade” at the World War I Memorial: Check out the barricade at the World War One memorial—> pic.twitter.com/lJEYjY3GtR— John McCormack (@McCormackJohn)...

Twitter photo by Charlie Spiering, the Washington Examiner. The Obama administration is adding more barricades at the World War Two Memorial in Washington, D.C. this morning, according to reporters on the scene. The reinforcements are being put in place apparently to prevent a repeat of yesterday when WWII veterans aided by several Republican Congressmen pushed aside barricades to visit their memorial.Buzzfeed got no response from the White House last night when queried about the administration closing the memorial to veterans.A report last night claimed that the Park Service would arrest veterans who attempt to visit the WWII Memorial.

Sen. Rand Paul blasted the federal government for trying to block World War II vets from visiting their memorial, saying “some idiot in government sent goons out there to set up barricades.” “If Harry Reid and the President want to keep the parks closed — I mean did you read the story today? Some idiot in government sent goons out there to set up barricades, so they couldn’t see the monument. People had to spend hours setting up barricades where there are never barricades to prevent people from seeing the World War II monument because they’re trying to play a...

Shutdown overreach: More personnel sent to WWII memorial than Benghazi; Park Service closes park it doesn't run (Video at Link) The National Park Service is sending so many officials out to shut down federal parks from visiting Americans that at this rate it might have to suspend furloughs if the government closure continues. Two examples: -- At the World War II Memorial on The Mall in Washington, where veterans have been staging protests to keep it open...

(CNSNews.com) - Government shutdown or not, there's no reason to keep elderly veterans away from the World War II Memorial, says Rep. Louie Gohmer (R-Texas), who was there on Tuesday when a group of 85- to 98-year-olds from entered the barricaded Memorial grounds. "It is a granite sidewalk -- it's a sidewalk!" Gohmert told Fox News on Wednesday."They (the National Park Service) spent extra money to go find barriers to put up in front of these World War II vets. And I'm wondering what are they going to do next -- hang a drapery over Mt. Rushmore? I mean, this...

On Monday, the first day of the government shutdown, a number of WWII veterans showed up at a memorial to their service to find that access had been blocked. The memorial is in a public space and is open 24/7, with almost no oversight from Park Police personnel. (Who, by the way, are exempt from the government shutdown.) The White House was, according to reports, informed of the veterans' visit and chose to block access. ... Several months ago, just before Sequestration began, the Department of Homeland Security preemptively released thousands of foreign nationals who were awaiting deportation, at least some of whom had serious criminal offenses on their records. (Child abuse, for example)... ...When bureaucrats are threatened with irrelevance or face appearing unneeded, they respond by inflicting as much pain as possible, in hopes that they can prove they’re necessary and get their budgets increased. And even worse, an administration trying to make a political point — as Obama’s is — has every incentive to make a shutdown felt as acutely as possible. So obviously,...

The National Park Service opened the World War II Memorial Wednesday to veterans visiting from around the country. Carol Johnson, a National Parks Service spokeswoman, said the veterans' groups had been granted access Wednesday because it was deemed a first amendment demonstration. The memorial was still closed to the public, however, and Johnson said other war memorials on the National Mall would also be closed. But veterans could be seen visiting the Vietnam War Memorial about a half-mile away. The memorials were closed and barricaded because of the government shutdown that began Tuesday. Veterans arriving at the World War II...

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) released a statement Wednesday faulting the Obama administration for the closure of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Cruz's full statement: President Obama is so fixated on forcing Obamacare on the American people that he's even willing to deny World War II veterans the right to access the memorial they have earned through their heroic service. This scenario encapsulates the bigger problem in Washington. President Obama is so set on imposing his destructive, far-left ideology that his government is literally barricading World War II veterans out of their memorial and blocking funding to the...
