If great white sharks organize a race to the Cape ahead of summer, a nearly 11-foot sub-adult female is way ahead of the pack. The more than 600-pound great white named Andromache has quickly migrated north to her summer home. She was recently detected off of Martha’s Vineyard, according to the OCEARCH tracker — which shows her as the only OCEARCH tagged shark along the Massachusetts coast. Last week, it appeared that the monstrous 1,000-pound, 12-footer adult male named Ironbound would be the first OCEARCH shark to reach the Cape, but then Andromache popped up on the western edge of...

The blockbuster film Jaws has been a perennial favorite here on Martha’s Vineyard since its release 45 years ago. The epic 1975 feature film, shot on the Vineyard in iconic places like the picturesque fishing village of Menemsha, pits a fictional seaside tourist town called Amity against a villainous great white shark whose fearsome triangular teeth—300 of them—bite and kill unsuspecting townspeople and summer visitors enjoying the local Atlantic Ocean waters. Jaws played recently at a COVID-safe drive-in theater here, allowing viewers to scream in the privacy of their own cars. The movie took a deep dive into the psyche...

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, California – A shark that bit and killed a surfer off of California's central coast probably was a great white and may have mistaken the boarder for prey, experts said Wednesday. "Most shark attacks in California are caused by great whites. There's no other species that regularly occurs off of California that could inflict that kind of injury," said Andrew Nosal, a marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

Colleagues of an abalone diver who was taken by two great white sharks off South Australia's Eyre Peninsula yesterday say they are shocked by the attack. Mr Clarkson, 49, grew up in Adelaide and...

When Captain John “J.C.” Burke phoned in a secondhand report of a great white shark swimming in an estuary on Naushon Island on September 21, 2004, Dr. Greg Skomal rolled his eyes. “Yeah, okay. Sure,” Skomal recalls saying dismissively to his friend. “Send me a photo.” Skomal, a senior biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and the state’s top shark expert, was understandably worn down from 17 years of supposed sightings of the creature. Save for a video of white sharks swimming near the bow of a boat off of Provincetown, he had only seen sporadic evidence to...
