Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced he has dismissed Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, citing a lack of public trust in the police leadership in the wake of the high-profile shooting that eventually led to a white officer being charged with first-degree murder in the death of a black teen shot 16 times in a Southwest Side street last year. "Superintendent McCarthy knows that a police officer is only as effective as when he has the trust of those he serves," Emanuel said at a City Hall news conference where he appointed a task force to look at police accountability....

I've noticed the same comments on social media that I suspect many other have about the capture of the man responsible for the shooting from (not of) the Planned Parenthood location in Colorado Springs. Three people were killed and nine wounded in the attack, including one police officer who was killed and four more injured attempting to save citizens who were taking fire. Very opinionated but very ignorant people have claimed that the shooter was taken alive because he was white, and also claim that if he was a minority, that police would have gunned him down. These idiots-let's call...

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Ayauna King-Baker loved Ben Carson’s “Gifted Hands†memoir so much that she made her daughter Shaliya read it. So when Carson showed up in town to sign copies of his new book, King-Baker dragged the giggly 13-year-old along to the bookstore so they could both meet him. To King-Baker, Carson’s “up-by-your-bootstraps†life story makes him a genuine celebrity worth emulating in the African-American community. But she’s also a Pompano Beach Democrat watching Carson rise in the Republican presidential polls. For King-Baker and many other African-Americans, the vast majority of whom are Democrats, there are two...

The leader of Black Lives Matter St. Paul kicked off his campaign for a seat in the state Legislature, challenging the only black member of the Minnesota House for her seat. The Pioneer Press reports that Rashad Turner, 30, a lifelong St. Paul resident, will challenge Rep. Rena Moran next year. The DFL incumbent is in her third term representing Frogtown, Midway, Summit-University, and portions of the North End and Cathedral Hill in St Paul. The Star Tribune’s story said that Turner indicated that he thought not enough progress has been made in St. Paul’s communities of color during Rep....

About 100 people gathered outside the Fourth Precinct police station in north Minneapolis on Thursday to celebrate ÂThanksgiving with friends and family brought together in a time of turmoil. They huddled around fires, prayed and gave thanks while sharing overflowing plates of donated food beneath the falling snow. It marked the 12th day of protests outside the precinct headquarters since Jamar Clark died after being shot by police Nov. 15. The gathering, which protesters called “BlacksGiving,†came a day after Clark’s Âfamily laid him to rest. At the Wednesday funeral, more than 300 people paid their respects and said goodbye...

For over half a century, American universities, with few exceptions, have ceased teaching and begun indoctrinating. In the past few weeks, this downhill spiral has accelerated. The university is now a caricature of an educational institution. It is difficult to come up with an idea or policy that is more absurd than the ideas and policies that now dominate American campuses. The University of California, once an elite public institution, now circulates a list of “microaggressions†that students and faculty must be careful to avoid lest they engage in racism and bigotry. Some examples: “There is only one race, the...

The single image of LaQuan McDonald for the past six months has been that of a 17-year-old African-American teenager dressed in a red graduation cap and gown. Beyond the fact that he was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer the night of October 20, 2014, only a few facts about the remainder of his life have been reported. /See video at link)

Donald Trump's notorious Twitter presence landed him in a little hot water with segments of the internet commentariat Sunday with a tweet about black-on-black crime.Trump appears to have been arguing that the new national focus on criminal justice reform is perhaps misguided, as most slain African-Americans are killed by other African-Americans, not police officers. Trump's argument and the graphic he shared immediately drew the ire of some thinkers. Some argued that Trump was pandering to sentiment that was already prevalent within the Republican base.Additionally, some took exception to the veracity of the claims in Trump's graphic, arguing particularly that the...

Donald Trump is taking heat on social media for a Sunday afternoon tweet of statistics purporting to show that the vast majority of murdered black people in the U.S. are killed by other black people. It also comes the day after a Black Lives Matter protester said he was physically and verbally assaulted at a Trump rally. It pays to have friends in high places. Al Sharpton gave himself a 71 percent raise last year after his National Action Network group drew a record $6.9 million in donations — as the controversial cleric’s association with Mayor de Blasio and President Obama lent him a newfound air of legitimacy. De Blasio’s election gave Sharpton a seat at City Hall, as the mayor treated him as an adviser and presented him at a press event next to Police Commissioner Bill Bratton after the death of Eric Garner. Also in 2014, Obama addressed NAN’s annual convention, bringing along five...

Early in September, Shaquandra Ratliff was killed in Chicago. The young mother was shot when a fight broke out at a “death remembrance party” for a gang member slain a year ago. But police say Ratliff had no gang affiliation and simply was at the wrong place at the wrong time. In other words, this is a story about yet another innocent black person shot to death. A report on the killing was posted on Yahoo! News, the most popular news site in the United States. Yahoo! News allows people to comment on articles and/or to vote on comments. A...

He then promised that what happened to Democratic candidate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders when his speech was taken over by two young Black Lives Matter protesters would never happen to him. In the speech, Trump told supporters that as president, he would be in favor of keeping surveillance on certain mosques and would...
