I have been a reader of the Free Republic for a long time, also I have never been a support of Obama, but I cannot belive all of the tripe that has appeared on this board today. Everything from Obama going to heaven to Obama spreading the waters of the Red Sea. I can remember when the Free Republic was a repository for breaking news, that was news. In the past week, however, the president has been trying to tamp down a noisy uprising on the left. The immediate cause for the rebellion is growing concern among Obama's progressive allies that he is prepared to deal away the public insurance option to win passage of a health-care bill. It's honorable and commendable to give freely out of one's own resources to charity, and Americans are the most generous people on the face of the planet. Americans contribute six or seven times more than some of our European counterparts. Charity is reaching into one's own pockets to help someone in need. Is it charity to reach into someone else's pocket to help someone in need? Is the federal government your brother's keeper?
