Last year, even as education reformers all across the country were turning cartwheels in celebration of Davis Guggenheim’s “Waiting for ‘Superman,’” I remained skeptical. I’ve been keeping tabs on the teacher unions for years, and understand how they work hand-in-glove with the Democratic Party. Since Guggenheim is a well-known liberal (who famously directed Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”), I was certain that “Superman” would tiptoe around the destructive influence Big Labor has on the education system. Last fall, during some down time on a business trip to New York City, I finally gave in and bought a $13 ticket at...

Pardon the vanity, but Dennis Miller on O'Reilly last night mentioned this movie on US education as the best of 2010. It looks like it was made by the director of Algore's movie so I would expect a left wing bias. Has anyone here seen the movie?
  • Waiting for ‘Superman’: One of the Most Persuasive Documentaries You Will See

Alternately heartbreaking and joyous, the film is a testament to the power of education and a critique of the adults who too often stand in the way. Conservatives are loathe to admit it, but director Davis GuggenheimÂ’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth impacted the national dialogue on global warming. And all Guggenheim had to work with was a PowerPoint presentation led by a charisma-challenged former vice president. Now, Guggenheim has turned his attention to our failing public school systems, a staggering amount of raw material for the Oscar-winning director. He leverages every factoid for a movie far more persuasive than Truth. ItÂ’s a film...

There may be no such thing as a silver bullet in public policy, but universal parental choice is the closest thing we have to one — assuming our politicians summon the courage to run with it. And based on the current trajectory of academic achievement in America, it is clear this courage needs to be summoned immediately. Time is running out for another generation of American students – yet despite overwhelming evidence of failure of government “solutions,” there remains little willingness to think outside of the bureaucratic box when it comes to raising academic achievement. Even the latest indictment of...
  • An Inconvenient Truth for Schools Debuts on Island (New Documentary)

Waiting for Superman is the new documentary by the same people who made An Inconvenient Truth, and this film sets out to do with regard to public education in America what its predecessor did with regard to climate and energy policy. That is, to expose the manifest failings of the system, point to the culprits for those failings and, finally, to suggest remedies. Making the case that the American education system is failing is probably the least contentious part of that process. The statistics on American educational underachievement are far less disputed than those on global warming. And the movie...
