I didn't get a driver's license right away as a young woman. My husband had enlisted in the Army and was at Fort Benning, GA going through basic combat and Infantry training. As a I mentioned in earlier posts, I lived with a family for that period of time with our daughter while my husband was gone. So it was time for me to get my drivers license . My husband was completing his training soon and I needed to drive down to pick him up. No one wanted to take the time to teach me how to drive. The...

Charlie Chase has a message for the guy accused of beating him up for holding a Trump 2020 sign: “You will not scare me away!” The 82-year-old Air Force veteran proved that by exercising his First Amendment right — again — for all to see Saturday in Fall River. He proudly stood in the square, an example to what the revolutionary Thomas Paine once wrote: “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.” Chase said the middle of his back ached after the attack, but the nonstop calls of support have eased his pain — especially kind words from...

What I witnessed today while I was in line at the Chick-Fil-A located in the Magnolia Mall in Florence, SC is why I love this place. I had placed my order and was waiting for my drinks when an older gentleman walked up to the server next to mine. When the young man behind the counter asked for his order, the gentleman stuttered, then got a look of fear in his eyes. "I've forgotten why I'm here and what I was going to get." The young server reached past the register, patted this man on his arm and said, "That's...

On Dec. 7, 1941, then-21-year-old Lauren Bruner was the second-to-last man to escape the burning wreckage of the USS Arizona after a Japanese plane dropped a bomb that ignited an enormous explosion in the battleship’s ammunition storage compartment. He lived to be 98 years old, marrying twice and outliving both wives. He worked for a refrigeration company for nearly four decades. This weekend, divers will place Bruner’s ashes inside the battleship’s wreckage, which sits in Pearl Harbor where it sank during the attack 78 years ago that thrust the United States into World War II. The Southern California man will...

Former Republican strategist and MSNBC contributor Steve Schmidt said Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) was "just awful" and had a "spectacularly bad" night at the Democratic presidential debate Wednesday night moderated by MSNBC. Later, when Gabbard was interviewed by MSNBC host Chris Matthews, Schmidt, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain in 2008, chimed in that her positions are "extreme." STEVE SCHMIDT, FMR. I think I know what the deal is with all the gushing adoration Tulsi Gabbard has somehow managed to wrangle from ordinarily sensible conservatives. Think of a regular guy walking down the hall in high school, and the head cheerleader passes by and says, “Hi.” The dude’s going to think she’s awesome. Of course, just because she is polite doesn’t mean Regular Joe is ever going to take her to the prom. Tulsi gets Strange New Conservative Respect for several reasons, but the primary one is that she doesn’t seem to hate our guts. She is what an opponent should...

My brother Kirk Randolph Elder died suddenly and unexpectedly 16 days before his 70th birthday. He and Tresta, his wife of 41 years, had planned a trip to Hawaii, where they were going to celebrate Kirk’s birthday. Kirk was a retired supervisor at an oil refinery, and we were extremely close. He started coming on my radio show about four years ago, reluctantly at first. We’d discuss politics, culture and sports. A registered Democrat, he and I often disagreed. Yet, week after week, I received letters from listeners who called him their “favorite Democrat.” Kirk always showed respect for Republicans...
