The U.S. will send a small number of U.S. special operations forces into Syria as part of a shift in its strategy against ISIS, officials said Friday. A senior administration official confirmed that President Barack Obama has authorized a contingent of less than 50 special operations forces to deploy into northern Syria. "We have been focused on intensifying elements of our strategy that have been working, while also moving away from elements of our approach that have proven less effective," the official explained. The White House was expected to announce the decision later Friday.

California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter is fighting a potential ban on tobacco sales on military bases and ships. The idea of a ban is currently under a department review, thanks to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. But Hunter, a Marine reservist who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is already fighting the idea. “It’s not curbed for anybody else. Why pick out the folks who choose of their own accord to fight for their country and serve their country, and punish them?”

A senior adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that Afghanistan will sign a deal Tuesday to allow American soldiers to remain in the country past the end of the year. John Podesta, speaking to a news conference at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, said he didn't know if newly inaugurated President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai would be the official signing the deal for Afghanistan. Podesta said he would sign it on behalf of the U.S. The deal will allow about 10,000 American troops to stay in the country after the international combat mission ends on Dec. 31.

Two US military aircraft have been fired at during an evacuation mission in South Sudan, wounding two service personnel. One is said to be in a critical condition, and it is thought at least one of the planes was damaged. South Sudan has blamed the attack on renegade troops.
