A resident of Mexico has been charged for conspiracy to grow marijuana with the intent to distribute it and damage to public lands and natural resources, according to federal prosecutors. Everado Cuadro Campos, 49, who is from Michoacan, Mexico, was arrested July 17 at a “marijuana garden” in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in Shasta County, according to a news release by the United States Department of Justice. U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife agents found a marijuana cultivation site near Rock Creek, according to a Department of Justice criminal complaint, and entered through a “well-worn” path....

(Javonnie McCoy and Atlanta attorney Catherine Bernard after his acquittal) Javonnie McCoy was growing marijuana when the cops came to his Middle Georgia home. He was caught red-handed with it. Almost a pound of it, in fact. He admitted it to police, and later he looked jurors in the eye and said, yep, it was mine. I used it as medicine. The jurors let him go. He was minding his own business and wasn’t hurting anybody, they reasoned. He just doesn’t belong in prison. The jury’s decision earlier this month in Dublin, Ga., may have been due to a...

I refuse to take on the additional guilt of not having gotten into Harry Potter until I was 35. But I’ll admit that despite the annoying J.K. Rowling vs. Native People scandal (that I doubt you heard anything about, but I followed because I’m Native), I got deeply sucked in last year. It was the depression and disgust surrounding Donald Trump’s election that sent me into a YA fantasy endurance run where I went so far as to purchase an armchair for my round-the-clock bedroom reading. By Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I was logging onto Pottermore to...

Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends) Tired of all this Winning yet? – Within a couple of hours of the announcement that former First Lady Barbara Bush had died at the age of 92, Fresno State English professor Randa Jarrar issued a tweet celebrating the event: “Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. F*** outta hear with your nice words.” After she’d gotten pushback from other Twitter users, she followed that little ditty up with: ““PSA: either you are against these pieces of s— and their...

Three years ago I attended the Conservative Political Action Conference and was struck by something I later concluded was probably a figment of my imagination. This year I returned, and, rather than having my recollection dispelled, it was confirmed. The young women who attend CPAC are spectacular. No kidding: What’s up with this concentration of incredibly attractive young, conservative women? It’s noticeable and remarkable. They are beautiful and stylish in the way French women often are, which is to say in their own way, not in a conforming or predictable way. They all look like the girl the high school...

The University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health was a lot less healthy this week. In celebration of “International No Diet Day,” the school of public health, together with the University of Minnesota’s School of Social Work and its College of Food and Agriculture, invited Virgie Tovar, a self-proclaimed “fat activist,” to instruct America’s future nutritionists, dietitians and social workers on the finer points of “fat oppression.”

Rosie O’Donnell fanned the flames of her longstanding public feud with Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying that American voters’ “innate humanity” will ultimately ensure that Trump is never elected President of the United States. “I believe in the innate humanity and sensible nature of Americans,” O’Donnell told Variety on Tuesday. “Do not give up, he will never be president.” O’Donnell participated in a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations panel on Monday, where she discussed her role as a lesbian character on the CBS comedy Mom. During the question and answer portion of the panel, O’Donnell hurled a few personal insults at the...
