For nearly a century, an oak in a German forest has helped lonely people find love—including the mailman who delivers its letters. Every morning for 20 years, Karl-Heinz Martens steered his yellow mail truck through the narrow streets of Eutin, a market town arranged around a little castle in northern Germany, near the Baltic Sea. On his route, Martens would drive through miles of farms and fields before disappearing into a deep, enchanted forest, where he unlocked a gate using a special key and reversed into his parking spot—as all mailmen do—facing outward to ensure a quick exit. As he...

Scientists originally discovered hyperaccumulators in the 1970s, and so far over 65 such plants have been identified in New Caledonia, 59 in Turkey, and a few others in countries like Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. However, scientists are convinced that many more remain to be discovered. This capacity to store large quantities of heavy metals has been studied by various biological sciences, from molecular biology to physiology and biochemistry, and while much has been learnt about the hyperaccumulation and hypertolerance of zinc and cadmium by some plants, nickel hyperaccumulation mechanisms remain a mystery. The evolution of hyperaccumulators like Pycnandra acuminata is believed to...

A tree taken from a World War I battlefield in France and planted during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit last week has disappeared from the White House lawn. President Donald Trump, Macron, his wife Brigitte and Melania Trump all posed for photo ops on the south portion of the White House lawn last Monday as they used shovels to unearth a setting for the sapling. The gifted sessile oak tree originated from the site of the Battle of Belleau Wood in Belleau, France, in which American, French and other allied troops fought the Germans during World War One. But...

“Give (one) enough rope, and (one) will hang (one)self.”Donald Trump's alleged war with the press has been widely assailed in the mainstream media. Newsweek called it "dangerous." The Daily Beast calls it "anti-American." SE Cupp opined that it's the stuff of dictators: Look, you know, I was talking to Cokie Roberts, a veteran journalist, about this recently, and she said, look, the media doesn't need to be popular. That's not our job. And so we shouldn't necessarily worry about popularity or our approval in the polls. But the poll that you talked about is trust, and that should matter to...

The historic Jackson magnolia has been on the south facade of the White House since the 1800s—making it the oldest on the grounds. But Tuesday, Melania Trump reportedly made the decision to have it removed after tree specialists determined “the overall architecture and structure of the tree is greatly compromised.”

The south facade of the White House will undergo a dramatic change this week: the historic Jackson Magnolia, a tree that has been in place since the 1800s, is scheduled to be cut down and removed. The enormous magnolia, one of three on the west side of the White House and the oldest on the White House grounds, extends from the ground floor, up past the front of the windows of the State Dining Room on the first floor and beyond the second-level executive residence. The tree has had a long and storied life, yet has now been deemed too...

Liberals specialize in ruining holidays and they put the most effort into Christmas, which is the most hated of all on the left. Usually these attempts involve trying to associate a holiday with genocide or racism, but they found a new way to make the season as horrifying as possible. There is an actual Hillary Clinton Christmas tree topper and yes, it’s for sale. Not only will this give your kids the heebie jeebies, it’s guaranteed to scare off Santa as well. Which Trees Offset Global Warming Best? Some trees are better than others at absorbing carbon dioxide by Earth Talk Updated March 29, 2017 Trees are important tools in the fight to stave off global warming because they absorb and store the key greenhouse gas emitted by our cars and power plants, carbon dioxide (CO2), before it has a chance to reach the upper atmosphere where it can help trap heat around the Earth’s surface. ALL PLANTS ABSORB CARBON DIOXIDE, BUT TREES ARE BEST While all living plant matter absorbs CO2 as part of photosynthesis, trees process significantly more than smaller...

Tiger snake found in a woman's Christmas tree in Australia. (Provided by Barry Goldsmith of Snake Catcher Victoria Australia.) It probably wasn’t what she asked Santa for, but a woman in Australia got an early Christmas surprise in her tree this year. According to professional snake catcher Barry Goldsmith, a woman in Melbourne found a tiger snake intertwined with the tinsel on her Christmas tree on Sunday morning. “She’s didn’t panic, she just took a photo and sent it to the snake catcher, me, and 20 minutes later I had the little bugger in a bag,” Goldsmith wrote on...

Ok, we are surprising someone tomorrow with a Christmas tree. We are Jewish so pretty clueless as to how this works. Got a beautiful tree about 6 feet, best watering stand we could find, even got millions of little lights all up around it (thanks, YouTube!). But it needs something around the base. Thought I could just grab a tree skirt, but this tree has an enormous stand, diameter maybe 2.5 feet. The skirts only have a small hole for the trunk. What can we put under the tree that would fit? So many Christians here who put up trees...
