Q Is the President concerned that his veto of the stem cell bill is going to hurt Republicans running in fall elections? MR. SNOW: Not a bit. Q He doesn't feel as though it will hurt? MR. SNOW: No. Q Why not? MR. SNOW: And I'll tell you what, it's worth pointing out one thing — actually several things on stem cells. Number one, the President is the first ever to have financed research using embryonic stem cell lines. Number two, there is a bit of demagoguery in the House of Representatives. Representative Castle was circulating talking points about a...

Although that’s the quotable moment of this exchange between Tony Snow and Helen Thomas, the entire thing is worth watching simply for its entertainment value alone.

Red faces after Putin jibe over peerages By Graeme Wilson and Alec Russell in St Petersburg (Filed: 17/07/2006) Tony Blair and Vladimir Putin tried to present a united front yesterday after the Russian president publicly mocked the Prime Minister's difficulties over the "cash for peerages" scandal. The men exchanged diplomatic pleasantries following talks yesterday afternoon, but struggled to disguise the strained relations after Mr Putin's barbed intervention. The Russian president used a televised press conference yesterday morning to take a swipe at Britain's increasingly beleaguered premier. Asked by Alec Russell, The Daily Telegraph's Washington correspondent, about British criticism of Russia's...

An early joke about New Jersey is attributed to Ben Franklin: "New Jersey is like a beer barrel, tapped at both ends, with all the live beer running into Philadelphia and New York." Maybe you had to be there. A contemporary joke is on display in Trenton where the majority Democratic legislature and Governor John "I promise not to raise your taxes" Corzine are in a fierce battle over the state budget, which last weekend led to a government shutdown reminiscent of the 1995-96 closings of the Federal government. A decade ago, it was a battle between a Republican Congress...

The Japanese PM showed off his Elvis impression Mr Koizumi burst into song with a few bars of "Love Me Tender" in the Jungle Room of Graceland on a private tour led by the singer's ex-wife. The tour is being widely seen as Mr Bush's thank-you to a loyal ally who is due to step down in September. The visit follows talks that focused on N Korea and beef imports on Thursday. Serenade To the strains...

LONDON -- Verra Budimlija was once classic fan of Prime Minister Tony Blair -- she's 40, well-educated advertising executive, the kind of voter who propelled Blair and the Labor Party to power in 1997. Not only does she live in Islington, a Labor stronghold where people took to streets to celebrate Blair's generation-shifting election, she lives in very brick house that was Blair's at the time. Nine years and two reelections later, Budimlija is suffering from "Tired of Tony," a malady afflicting even once-fanatical supporters as it spreads across Britain like blanket of fog. "He has been around too long,"...

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- For the second time this season, sophomore Nextel Cup Series driver Kyle Busch plans to get together with Tony Stewart, after Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400, to smooth over differences created on the racetrack. The season is only three races old, but in the aftermath of his third-place finish versus Stewart's 21st, Busch vowed to meet with -- or at least speak to -- the defending Nextel Cup champion this week before the series heads to Atlanta. "I'm sure he's already left the racetrack," Busch said. "If I can't catch him at the airport, I'll try to find...

WINSTED -- It was like walking into a war zone when police arrived to investigate the report of a fight late Thursday night at the Batcheller Elementary School. Police found dozens of young men poised to do battle and a cache of weapons left behind when they fled, police Sgt. Brian Fox said. As many as 50 young people thought to be members of opposing gangs scattered into a nearby wooded area, Fox said. A few were later found and questioned by police but haven't been charged, he said. The cause of the confrontation remains under investigation. Drugs are thought...

Tony Blair 'relished' sending British soldiers off to war By Melissa Kite, Deputy Political Editor (Filed: 18/09/2005) Tony Blair "relished" sending troops to war, according to claims by a former Downing Street aide which the Government tried to suppress. The Prime Minister also railed at "the f***ing Welsh" and made policies minutes before going on television, Lance Price says in his book The Spin Doctor's Diary. Mr Blair prior to sending troops to Iraq in 1998 Mr Price, a former deputy head of Downing Street communications, claims that Mr Blair promised Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul, that the Government would...

In a confidential report, Young Muslims and Extremism, prepared jointly by the Home and Foreign offices in mid-2004 and presented to Prime Minister Tony Blair, we learn something about the inner thinking of the British government. Leaked to the Sunday Times of London, the report is now available in four parts in .pdf format at the newspaper's site. Its goal is "to encourage moderate Muslim opinion to the detriment of extremism" and to that end proposes an "Operation Contest." Along the way, it contains much of interest in it, including these points: "A number of extremist groups are actively recruiting young...

'Spamalot' Receives 14 Tony Nominations NEW YORK - "Monty Python's Spamalot," a madcap medieval musical loosely based on the zany British troupe's film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," led the field with 14 Tony nominations Tuesday, including best musical and bids for its King Arthur, Tim Curry, and Lancelot, Hank Azaria. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "The Light in The Piazza" got 11 each. The Pulitzer Prize-winning "Doubt," John Patrick Shanley's drama of uncertainty set against the backdrop of a Catholic school in the Bronx, received eight nominations. Kathleen Turner picked up a best actress nomination for her role as...

It took a second look to ensure that, yes, it was Tony Blair. Eight years of government are now well etched on his features and the strain of the election is showing. Blair, remember, is not used to having to fight elections in the fullest sense of the word. In 1997 he was a fresh face, a welcome relief after eighteen years of the Conservatives, elected almost by acclamation to replace a tired old government weakened by sleaze allegations. In 2001 he was a prime minister in total command facing an unfocussed and still divided opposition.

....Tony Snow's illness "Popular Fox News TV and radio host Tony Snow is about to undergo surgery to remove his cancerous colon," Washington Whispers columnist Paul Bedard reported yesterday, Thursday, at www.usnews.com. "'I've been living in fear of cancer for 27 years,' he tells Whispers. 'I've got too much to live for.' He was meeting with a surgeon [yesterday], and might go under the knife this weekend. Snow said he's had colitis for years and knew he was a high-risk candidate. His mother died of cancer when she was 38. He got the diagnosis last week during a routine check....

It seems that recent analysis of Tony Blair is actually a case of missing person: A page of doodles found on Tony Blair's desk at last week's economic summit in Davos sparked a wave of excitement in the media. Psychologists and handwriting experts were drafted in by the press in the hope of getting a glimpse into the inner workings of the prime ministerial mind. Newspaper stories contained phrases such as "struggling to concentrate" and "not a natural leader". Now - and with not a little glee - Downing Street has revealed that the scribblings were not the work of...
