ON NOW.
Bush - our alliance is stronger than ever. PM Blair and I share a common vision of peace.
Any questions on the GASP.... DUMMIESTREET MEMO YET????
I think instead of trying to solve Africa's poverty situation, we should start with our own country. Whatever aid we do send to Africa ends up in the hands of the warlords and corrupt governments.
What about BONO ?
$414M of projected aid amount will be provided immediately for their immediate needs.
Busy schedule in the int'l agenda in the coming months. On Africa .. there is a real and common desire to help them come out of their dilemma .. thousands of children are dying every day. Though it's important that we provide the resources .. it's not just the resources. It's about debt, trade, diseases that are killing so many people. It's about conflict resolution and about making sure that, in doing this, it's not a something for nothing deal. The African leadership have to commit to no corruption, etc. and that the aid goes to the people who need it. Have to deal with all of the issues with African leadership.
In re debt: I'm pleased with the progress .. I hope we can conclude a deal at the finance minister's meeting this weekend to cancel the debt in addition to substantial funding. In the coming weeks, we want to carry on with the education, diseases, infrastructure.
I still get a chuckle out of Blair's speech before congress when he mentioned being shown the parts of the WH that were scorched in 1812. "Sorry about that."
Apparently .. only two questions each, per W.
HEH HEH - lurking on the Dark side and they are pissed at that.
Through trade they can develop a more hopeful society .. aid helps .. but trade makes an enormous difference to struggling economies. We'll continue to take the lead on the issue.
Q - both leaders: I understand you're pretty close to cracking the differences between you on contributing aid to these countries. Africa has really raise the ante, calling this a historic moment.
Bush - no developed nation is going to want to support a govt. that doesn't support its people or have open market and economies.
Well someone said it...
"I think instead of trying to solve Africa's poverty situation, we should start with our own country"
Ain't that the truth. How much is this going to cost the taxpayer? Personally, I'm damn tired of opening my wallet for every tin-horn dictator in the world.
Bush sure isn't a friend of the conservative.
What was the response?
Bush - my conversations with PM focused on "how can we do this peacefully." Noboy wants to go to war .. the hardest thing I do is to comfort people who've lost loved ones in combat .. it's the last option.
Sounds like the DUmmieStreet Memo is a smoking nothing! LOL DUmmies are very upset right now!
BTW, Bono has come to see me .. I admire him .. he's a man of great depth and a heart for the people of Africa. ... I don't characterize the rock stars that way .. I've met the man.
We lead the world in research for climate change .. the US has taken the lead on this research .. ... our country is going to have to diversify away from the type of automobiles we drive .. and it's happening here. Technology is changing how we approach the environment. You cannot leave developing nations out of the world if you're going to have a cleaner world.
Bush: There are a lot of big talkers in the world...when I say we're going to do something, we mean it. Bush on Bono: He's a man of great depth and heart.
Beat me to it! : )
