During the signing ceremony for three bills designed to support law enforcement and first responders, President Biden took some time to speak to the 7-year-old son of an officer who took his own life in 2019. Biden signed the Protecting America’s First Responders Act of 2021, the Confidentiality Opportunities for Peer Support (COPS) Counseling Act, and the Jaime Zapata and Victor Avila Federal Officers and Employees Protection Act on Thursday morning. All three serve to support law enforcement through increased benefits, peer support, and granting the US extraterritorial jurisdiction over certain crimes against federal officers or employees abroad. Shortly after...

THE Delta variant strain of Covid-19 is causing a severe uptick in infection cases throughout the United States. The highly-contagious variant is accounting for over 80 percent of the nation's Covid-19 cases, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. How do they test for the Covid-19 Delta variant? Although there is no specific test for the Delta variant, it’s likely a positive Covid-19 result indicates you could be infected with the variant, according to Human and Health Services of Texas. The reason is because the majority of Covid cases in the United States are the Delta variant.

Three senators announced within hours of each other on Thursday that they had tested positive for the coronavirus, despite each being fully vaccinated. Sens. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Angus King (I-Maine) and John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) said they had tested positive in what is known as a breakthrough case, when fully vaccinated individuals test positive for COVID-19. It marks three known breakthrough cases among senators within 24 hours. The positive tests come as senators have been back in their home states for roughly a week and aren't expected to return to Washington, D.C., until mid-September.
  • Three random words are still one of the best passwords, experts say

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre would like to politely remind you that three random words are a good, secure password. ... Because everything, increasingly, wants you to have a unique account and password for its service. NCSC recommends a three-word password because it bypasses some of the most common ways that criminals crack passwords. These are things like single words with predictable substitutions (5 for S, or ! for 1) and brute-force techniques that rely on shorter passwords to succeed. "The stereotypical password is a single dictionary word or name, with predictable character replacements," says the NCSC. In contrast,...

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the man of many controversial quotes, now says three-year-olds should be forced to wear masks: https://twitter.com/tomselliott/status/1415006074483118085 “The children who are not able to get vaccinated because of their age, should follow – their parents should follow with them – the guidelines of the CDC, that unvaccinated children of a certain age – greater than two years old – should be wearing masks,” he said. It’s not the first time Fauci has contradicted himself. In early 2020, for example, Fauci and the CDC discouraged the use of masks.Fauci even said that masks were “not effective in preventing” Covid-19 and told...

Susan Hopkins, a specialist in infectious diseases at Public Health England, said that Britons should wear masks made with at least two, or even three, layers, and left open the possibility that the UK might follow the U.S.’s lead and recommend double masking. The British government made wearing masks, or any kind of face covering, in shops mandatory in July 2020, with the government advising they be made with at least two layers of fabric.

Adam West, the ardent actor who managed to keep his tongue in cheek while wearing the iconic cowl of the Caped Crusader on the classic 1960s series Batman, has died. He was 88. West, who was at the pinnacle of pop culture after Batman debuted in January 1966, only to see his career fall victim to typecasting after the ABC show flamed out, died Friday night in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukemia, a family spokesperson said. West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren....

Ford Motor Co. is set to announce new investments in three plants in Michigan, reports reveal. The carmaker will reportedly invest a “significant amount” in assembly plants in Wayne, Flat Rock, and its Romeo Engine Plant, according to The Detroit News. The latest news of the carmaker’s U.S. expansion comes only two months after the company announced it was investing up to $700 million in its Michigan facilities. In February, Ford CEO Mark Fields said his company’s decision to create jobs in America rather than in Mexico is a “vote of confidence” in Trump’s incoming administration and the pro-business environment...

Chuck Barris, “The Gong Show” creator and host who claimed — though never too seriously — that he doubled as a CIA assassin during the height of his game show popularity, has died at his home in Palisades, N.Y. He was 87. The popular game show creator, producer and host died Monday of natural causes, a representative for his wife said. The “Gong Show” was among a handful of Barris’ creations that dominated the TV game show landscape in the 1960s. He launched “The Dating Game” in 1965, which was an instant hit with numerous imitations. Barris followed with "The...

An anonymous apparent fan of pigs and fairy tales is offering some shelter for any piglets still loose after a semitrailer crash last week in southwest Ohio. Motorists on U.S. Route 35 in Xenia Township west of Dayton noticed Monday the three small houses along the highway, built fabled "Three Little Pigs" style: That means one of straw or hay, one of sticks and one of bricks. The Dayton Daily News reports that no big bad wolves had huffed and puffed enough to blow down any houses by late afternoon.

The Tech Report crew seems to think that SteamOS and Mantle could ruin PC gaming. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion but I'm sure you guys will have plenty to say on the topic. Now, all of a sudden, next year's gaming landscape looks to be shaping up very differently. Instead of three major platforms based on a common hardware architecture, game developers will face two monolithic platforms and a fragmented one—the PC—that will have two starkly different operating systems and three different APIs—Direct3D, OpenGL, and Mantle.

(Reuters) - North Korea fired three short-range missiles from its east coast on Saturday, South Korea's Defense Ministry said, but the purpose of the launches was unknown. Launches by the North of short-term missiles are not uncommon, but the ministry would not speculate whether these latest launches were part of a test or training exercise. "North Korea fired short-range guided missiles twice in the morning and once in the afternoon off its east coast," an official at the South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman's office said by telephone.

It's the sort of abstract puzzle that keeps a scientist awake at night: Can you predict how three objects will orbit each other in a repeating pattern? In the 300 years since this "three-body problem" was first recognized, just three families of solutions have been found. Now, two physicists have discovered 13 new families. It's quite a feat in mathematical physics, and it could conceivably help astrophysicists understand new planetary systems. The trove of new solutions has researchers jazzed. "I love these things," says Robert Vanderbei a mathematician at Princeton University who was not involved in the work. He says...

Proposed Amendment No. 3 (Nebraska) A vote FOR this constitutional amendment would change the number of terms a member of the Legislature may serve from two consecutive four year terms to three consecutive four year terms. A vote AGAINST this constitutional amendment would retain two consecutive four year terms as the number of terms a member of the Legislature may serve. A constitutional amendment to change the limit on legislative terms to three consecutive terms. The public voted for two terms and they have spoken!!! Some wish to circumvent the will of the people.
