Jeff Jones, the president of Uber, is quitting the car-hailing company after less than a year. The move by the No. 2 exec, said sources, is directly related to the multiple controversies there, including explosive charges of sexism and sexual harassment. (UPDATE: Uber confirmed the departure and will be sending a statement. Sandy Spanos is only 58, but now she could lose her house and be unable to pay for treatment for her cancer, which she was diagnosed with two years ago because the reform will leave her and her husband in hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. Mrs. Spanos invested in three taxi licenses so she could enter retirement comfortably with a good superannuation, but she said it has all been ripped from her. “What did I do wrong?” She asked news.com.au. The Victorian government wants to deregulate the taxi industry by abolishing taxi licenses and introducing a single registration...

There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a cab for a living. It was a cowboy's life, a gambler's life, a life for someone who wanted no boss, constant movement and the thrill of a dice roll every time a new passenger got into the cab. What I didn't count on when I took the job was that it was also a ministry. Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a rolling confessional. Passengers would climb in, sit behind me in total anonymity and tell me of their lives. We were...

Taco Bell has fired Benjamin Golden, a senior marketing manager who was caught on video physically assaulting an Uber driver in the Los Angeles area on Oct. 30. In a three-and-a-half-minute clip—which has accrued more than 400,000 YouTube views—Golden appears to be too intoxicated to reveal his destination to his driver, Edward Caban. Caban eventually pulled over into a parking lot and told the 32-year-old marketer to get out of the car, which Golden initially refused to do before punching and slapping the driver while also grabbing his hair. Golden, a resident of Newport Beach, Calif., got out of the...

Uber is crushing the taxi industry that has dominated New York City — and other cities — for so many years. Data from the Taxi and Limousine Commission analyzed by the New York Daily News shows total trips in the first half of 2015 were down 10 percent to 77 million, compared to same period last year. Revenues from yellow cab fares have declined as well. And in July, there were 100,000 Uber trips in New York City per day, a 4x increase from last summer. It's hard for taxis to compete with Uber, the ubiquitous car-hailing service said to...

It's no wonder cities like New York have been so hostile to Uber. As economist Mark Perry details in a post on his Carpe Diem site, the introduction of Uber and other app-based ride-sharing services has led to a collapse in the price of New York City's taxi medallions. For those who don't know, a cabbie needs one of these limited-edition medallions to operate in the city. As a result, the price for a New York taxicab medallion has been astronomical — reaching more than $1 million in 2013. There's even a company, Medallion Financial, that handles loans needed to...

Hillary Clinton gave a speech warning that the new "sharing economy" of businesses such as the rideshare company Uber is "raising hard questions about workplace protections." Democrats hate what labor unions hate, and a taxi drivers' union hates Uber, too. Its NYC website proclaims, "Uber has the money. But we are the PEOPLE!" The taxi cartels, which provide inferior service and are micromanaged by government, don't like getting competition from efficient companies like Uber. Clinton didn't mention Uber by name, but we don't have to wonder which company she meant. The New York Times reports that Clinton contacted Uber and...

Bob Simon‘s driver had ‘dead’ arm, 9 license suspensions CBS newsman Bob Simon’s black-car driver was a rookie with nine license suspensions who is suspected of speeding during the fatal crash — and had just one hand on the wheel because he had a “dead” left arm from a suicide attempt, sources said Thursday. Investigators believe Abdul Reshad Fedahi, a 44-year-old Afghan immigrant who lives in a homeless shelter, mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake after sideswiping a car on the West Side Highway at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, law-enforcement sources said. “He hit the gas pedal instead...

The cab driver in the crash which killed veteran CBS correspondent Bob Simon had his license suspended at least half a dozen times prior to the fatal accident, according to police sources. Reshad Abdul Fedahi, from Queens, New York, also had two previous traffic convictions, NBC reported. The license suspensions had been cleared up, authorities also said, and Mr Fedahi, 44, was driving on a probationary license. Daily Mail Online was awaiting a comment from the Taxi and Limousine Commission on the driver's previous suspensions but the agency earlier confirmed that Fedahi’s probationary license had been suspended pending the outcome...

Add this to the list of evidence about, shall we call it, the rivalry between motorists and cyclists: The head of London's taxi drivers' association has compared cyclists to members of the self-described Islamic State. Steve McNamara's comments come just days after London cleared the way for the spread of segregated bike lanes and dedicated traffic signals. "The loonies out there in the cycling world, they're almost the sort of ISIS of London," McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, told LBC Radio. "Their views and their politics — if you are not with them — and we...

The examination to become a London cabbie is possibly the most difficult test in the world — demanding years of study to memorize the labyrinthine city’s 25,000 streets and any business or landmark on them. As GPS and Uber imperil this tradition, is there an argument for learning as an end in itself? At 10 past 6 on a January morning a couple of winters ago, a 35-year-old man named Matt McCabe stepped out of his house in the town of Kenley, England, got on his Piaggio X8 motor scooter, and started driving north. McCabe’s destination was Stour Road, a...

Friend: Andy Kaufman is still alive Could faking his own death be Andy Kaufman's biggest joke yet? In 1980, legendary comedian Andy Kaufman and his writing partner, Bob Zmuda, wrote a script for a film called “The Tony Clifton Story,” based on a character of Kaufman’s. On Page 124, there is a block of dialogue intended for Kaufman to speak as himself, informing viewers of Clifton’s demise. Among the lines: “On June 12, 1980 . . . Tony Clifton, at the age of 45, died of cancer at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Hollywood, California.” Four years later, at age 35, Kaufman himself would,...
