Bob Simon‘s driver had ‘dead’ arm, 9 license suspensions
CBS newsman Bob Simon’s black-car driver was a rookie with nine license suspensions who is suspected of speeding during the fatal crash — and had just one hand on the wheel because he had a “dead” left arm from a suicide attempt, sources said Thursday. Investigators believe Abdul Reshad Fedahi, a 44-year-old Afghan immigrant who lives in a homeless shelter, mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake after sideswiping a car on the West Side Highway at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, law-enforcement sources said. “He hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. He sped up after hitting the car,” a law-enforcement source told The Post.

I'd think not properly vetting the driver has to violate a law in NYC. There's a law for everything there.

It sounds like the cost-cutters at CBS went with the low bidder.

At the respectable places, the drivers are required to supply the car themselves. This necessarily implies a certain level of financial responsibility.

So, how is it that someone can be a “rookie” with a history of 9 suspensions?
Second, the editor is an ass for allowing the descriptive term above that would imply that an Afghan immigrant might be “black”.

This is Ted Kennedys immigration act. In the past all the way up to the 1980s almost all the taxi drivers, limo drivers were native New Yorkers, a lot of Jewish guys from Brooklyn. Then Kennedys immigration act started to take hold and the taxi/limo owners found they could screw over these off the boat Muslims because they were naive, so they changed the pay system where instead of the owners and drivers splitting the days take 50/50, the owners now got a set fee no matter what. So if the lease fee was $140 and it was a slow day and you only grossed $150, the owner got his $140 and the driver $10 for 12 hours work. So all those native New Yorkers said “F this, I’m not working for nothing” which is why you got all these 3rd worlders now driving. So chalk up another death to Ted Kennedy.
No, that’s what they call limos in NYC, “black cars” because of the cars color. They also call taxis “Yellow cabs”. I don’t know why they do that, I mean wouldn’t it be easier to just call them “Limos” or “Taxis”?
Why doesn’t government get the blame? Government has their certifications and licenses, and still this guy got through. Another failure of government causing a death.
He worked cheap, that is all that mattered to the limo company.

As I recall, they made a movie about NYC cab drivers. It was called “Death Race 2000”.
I have been in a lot of limos(town cars) in the last twenty years. Typically to just going to and from airports. Almost in all cases the person driving the car has been doing it for a “few” weeks. This is invariably a job people take when they lose their regular job and have not found another steady one yet. The turnover rate of drivers is incredibly high.
I have been in a car when I purposely kept talking to the driver because I knew they were falling asleep. Would you want a job where you had to get up at 3am to take someone to the airport one day and then the next day you are up until 3am picking someone up at the airport and driving them home?
Second jobs are tough. And, I’m not surprised that some—perhaps many—limo drivers are doing it as a second job.
But, come on... this guy had 9 speeding tickets...

Uh, hey, um, hello?
It may just be me - but getting in a car driven by a suicidal afghani serial speeder doesn’t seem like the brightest idea.
Even if you get to your destination safely chances are he’ll just blow up the car when you get there.

That’s a pretty botched suicide attempt if all he killed was his arm. I’m scratching my head wondering how he managed that.
